際８巻は、レコアとシロッコの出逢い、マウアーの戦死などに目が行ってしまいがちだが、ティターンズによる毒ガス兵器の使用という愚行にも注目して見ていただきたい。

「戦争を早期に終結させるため」という理由で、ティターンズは条約で禁止されている毒ガス兵器を使用する。現実でも起こりうるような話の展開である。ティターンズの理屈は、「イラクは大量破壊兵器を所有している」として攻撃を開始したアメリカやイギリスと大差ない。一方的で、独善的で、強制的である。でも、それは人間の一つの本質であったりもする。ティターンズのジャミトフやバスクだけでなく、シロッコやクワトロやハマーン、ジェリドやレコアなど、多くの登場人間が人間の本性を剥き出しにした行動を取っている。彼ら彼女らの行動は、自分勝手とも言えるが純粋であるとも言える。自分に素直なだけなのだ。そういったある種の人間らしさを備えているからこそ、『Zガンダム』には魅力的なキャラクターが多いのだと思う。

「オレはカミーユを倒さない限り一歩も進めない男になっちまった」と語るジェリドの不屈の精神力には頭が下がる。しかし、それが仇となって周囲の人間が死んでいくということに彼は気づいていない。それがまた不幸である。純粋すぎる人間は、生きていくことですら困難であることが良く判る。幸せになんてなれるはずもない。彼は出てくる度に不幸になるが、不幸になる度に好きになってしまうキャラクターである。

　さてこの巻の見所です。
女スパイ、レコア、ジュビトリスにてシロッコと運命的出会いを果たす。しかしシロッコの色目使いは異常だ。目に留まる女性パイロットは口説く口説く・・。彼の目的はジュビトリスのにハーレム化だったのか・・。冗談です。
　私的にこの巻の見所はマウァーとジェリドのエピソード。何故か出来る女性に気に止められるジェリド・メサ。彼には資質はあったのだろう。ライラとマウァーが引かれたのはそのため。しかし彼はカミーユにこだわり、意識しすぎたために、時代をつかめなかった不運な男でした。そのジェリドを守るため身を挺してマウァーは彼を救いました。彼女の戦死はこのストーリーで一番人間らしい死でした。今見ても悲しいエピソードです。

　やはり見るならテレビ版に限る！劇場版は全然駄目。
　このZガンダムはモビルスーツの美しさ、カッコよさでは群を抜く。あのガンプラブームの火付け役であるファーストガンダムですら、このＺガンダムシリーズに登場するモビルスーツには適わない。またネーミングも素晴らしく、この回に出てくる「バイアラン」もその一つである。ジェリドはカッコいいモビルスーツに恵まれており、彼はバイアランにも乗っている。しかし最後に冗談みたいなモビルスーツ・バウンドドッグに乗っていたのにはチョット・・・それはさておき、このＺガンダムの特徴は、話が面白いというのと音楽が素晴らしいというのと、モビルスーツのカッコよさでもある。考えてみれば｢ロボットもの｣がここまでカッコ良くなったのも、ガンダムシリーズのお蔭と言っても言い過ぎではないだろう。話の質が大人にも通じるほど高いから、様々なクオリティが相乗効果で高くなったのでしょうね。
