過渡期の始まりだとか自分のやりたい事を前面に出したとかと言われる作品。そう言われてみると、冒頭にＧｏｏｄ，ｇｏｏｄ Ｂｙｅときて誰ひとり見てないショーでは好きな歌を思いのままにそしてその後は枕詞で始めて結詞で締めるといった構成も、それなりに意味があるのかなと。孤独感や疎外感をテーマにした曲が多く、（4）（6）（7）などに見られる、物事に懐疑的で深入りしない、他者と深いコミュニケーションをとろうとしない（とれない）といった姿勢には、今でもちょっとドキッとさせられるものがあります。ラストの結詞は、クラムチャウダーでの透明な美しさとは違って、あたかもレクイエムのような趣。これを含めたスニーカーダンサーまでの3枚がとくに好きですね。

『氷の世界』というベスト・セラーをすでに記録したあと、拓郎は『明日に向かって走れ』、そして陽水はこのアルバムでフォーライフ・レコードからスタート。ちょうどフォーク・ソング改め、ニュー・ミュージック到来の頃。
シングル『青空ひとりきり』に見るファンキーなロックもあるが、このアルバムの素敵な点は、曲ごとのバラエティさにある。
1オープニングのイントロではクラシック・コンサートの始まる前の音から（ヴァイオリンによる調弦の４和音を陽水の声による多重録音で模倣）、2タイトル曲でヴァイオリン・ソロなどのクラシック風アレンジを施し（この曲は『帰れない二人』とともに素晴らしい作品です）、3対照的に『Ｓｕｍｍｅｒ』『坂道』ではリズム・マシンを効果的に活用、4『Ｉ氏の結婚』では夏のリゾート気分にひたれる。
また、笛の音が秋の風情を醸し出したり、＜和＞の風味をうまく＜洋＞とブレンドさせた音楽がこの一枚で楽しめる。アコースティックとエレクトリックのバランスも素晴らしい。

この時代は、多くのプレーヤー（演奏家）がアルバムの中でそれぞれの役を演じきっていたし、ミキサーの音に対する感覚もプロフェッショナルだった（たとえデジタル時代の今でも音楽表現を創造するのは人）。つまり、音楽とは卓越した演奏を聞かせてくれることがレコード作りでは当たり前の時代だったのだと。そういう観点では、クラシック音楽もポップスも同じ土俵であった。
リアル・タイムを知る人が懐かしむよりも、新しい世代あるいは今の安あがりでＣＤを消耗品化させている業界に【琴線に触れる音とは？】【音楽に対する警鐘（単に売れればそれでいいの？）】このことを教えてくれる一枚。ツールだけではこのような音は決して出せないのです。

陽水が「センチメンタルを美しいとは感じなくなった」とコメントした後に作ったアルバム。特有のセンチメンタリズムはなくとも、その楽曲とシュールな歌詞は陽水そのものだ。当時「サウンド志向」と呼ばれたことについて、後に彼自身は意図的ではなかったと述べている。しかし、タイトル曲「招待状のないショー」の繊細なアレンジに相当な作り込みを感じるのは私だけではあるまい。独特の艶やかなハイトーンと相まって、普遍的名曲に仕上がった。それは今、聴いても素晴らしい。
後ろをかためるミュージシャンも一流。ドラムス：村上ポンタ秀一、ベース：小原礼、後藤次利、ギター：鈴木茂、大村憲司、是方博邦、高中正義、永井充男、キーボード：矢野顕子　等々・・・
