本巻はこの作品の一つのハイライトといえるのではないでしょうか。「戦争の大義」という大きなテーマにたいして、「味方の裏切り」というアンチテーゼが作品全体を暗く重苦しいものにしています。そういったことから、SFアニメというより戦争物の純文学のような色彩を持っています。

第７話「再会」では、単純に「恋愛」と「希望」を描いています。純粋に楽しめば良い話だと思います。

第８話「軍務と理想」では、「無意味な殺戮」というテーマに対して「復讐」と「恐怖」というモチーフを使います。この作品全体に重要な「戦争の意味」を問う話です。

第９話「最前線」では、敵と戦うことの意義を、「戦争の大義」と「無意味に敵を殺さない」という難しい対立モチーフを使います。その回答として「必ず生きて帰る」と「仲間の為に戦う」を描いています。

この作品を他のガンダムシリーズとは一線を画す物にしている意義深い３話だと思います。たぶんその理由でこの部分を編集した劇場映画「ミラーズリポート」が作られたのでしょう。本巻だけでは不足部分があるので減点して星４つにしようとも思いましたが、非常に重要なテーマを扱っているので減点はやめました。そちらと併せて観賞することをお勧めします。

冒頭のジムの追撃部隊がユーリ少将の「気化爆弾」で消えていくシーンが切ない。ミデアで待機中の小隊のやり取りがいいですね（エレドアとカレンがね）。カレンが降下中にガウとの遭遇戦に突入した際に、上から物凄いスピードで降りてきたシロー機がいい感じです。マゼラ部隊の隊長のオトボケ具合もいい。味方を焼いても涼しい顔してるギニアスの発狂ぶりも見逃せません。

EZ-8になったのは大破した陸戦型ガンダムを有り合わせの余剰部品で補ったからです。よく知りたい方には劇場版をご覧になるとエレドアが帰ってくる所とか、修復前の回収された機体が拝めます。
この辺りからシローの戦争に対する考え方が徐々に変化して物語の本質に迫っていきます。
