そもそも{スカ一辺倒}のバンドではなかった(知ってた?)のだが,しかし,このサイケデリック・コンセプト・アルバムは{NO#SKA}どころの話じゃない。ただ,彼らを至極{内向的}なバンドだと位置づけていた者にとっては,さほど驚きではない。

2年ほど前にレピッシュのライヴを観た時には、80年代後半にスカとパンクに片足ずつ突っ込んでデビューした日本人バンドが90年代にどんな道を歩むべきなのか~~を懸命に、しかし確信をもって模索する姿に頼もしいしぶとさを覚えたものだけれど、通算10枚目となるこのアルバムで聴ける自在な音作りは、彼らなりのひとつの答えなのだろう。サウンド的には、中期ビートルズからクーラ・シェイカーに至るUKサイケデリック・ロックがモチーフ。それは、タイトルが象徴的な(2)よりむしろ、(4)や(6)のコード感とベース・ライン、シタールとタブラが高らかに鳴り響く(8)により顕著だ。また、フリーキーなブルースに乗せてなつかしいニオイを探す(7)も妙にサイケデリックな“ニオイ”を喚起する。さらに、この(7)同様過去に想いをはせる(10)や寓話調の(8)などの歌詞もサイケ期のビートルズっぽい。時代の気分を鋭く読んだこのしたたかさ~~やっぱりしぶといわ、こいつら。 (星野吉男) --- 1999年10月号
