インドネシア、中国、香港を舞台にした佳作そろいのアルバムです。
中でも「スラバヤ通りの妹」は傑作だと思います。
年寄りは日本人に目をそむけ、しっかり者の少女はユーミンの前をあるいていく。
いつもは心に浮かんだ絵を曲にするユーミンですが、このアルバムはどうしても実体験としか思えない歌詞が素晴らしいです。

他のアルバムとは違う感じがするこのアルバムは、何度聞いても飽きさせません

ユーミンが２７歳の時に４５回転ＬＰで発売されたミニ・アルバムです。アルバムのテーマと形態によって、他のユーミンのアルバムとは一味違う仕上がりになりました。

冒頭の「スラバヤ通りの妹へ」が大好きでした。レコードの時もよく聞きましたが、２５年の月日を経て再び♪RASA　SAYANG　GEH・・・・♪のフレーズを聞いた時は旧友と再会した感じです。インドネシア民謡の「ラサ・サヤン」をモティーフに取り上げており、彼女の実体験のような重みのある歌詞が印象的でした。異国情緒溢れるという月並みの表現でしか表わせませんが、メロディと歌詞、そしてこめられたメッセージが心を揺さぶります。

あの頃のユーミンは、時代の先端を走っていました。他のアーティストに先駆けて、アジアへの関心を持ってこれらの４曲を作ったのだと思います。この意欲的なアプローチは四半世紀たっても色褪せていないと感じました。

ポップな「HONG KONG NIGHT SIGHT」も好きですし、アカシヤで有名な大連を歌った「大連慕情」も雰囲気がありますね。このようなしっとりとした曲にユーミンのオリジナリティが感じられます。

「わき役でいいから」もいいですね。荒井由実時代の名曲の系譜を感じさせるノスタルジア溢れるポップスです。４曲しか収録されていませんが、従来のユーミンとは少し系統が違うアルバム・コンセプトが今でも聴かれる理由なのでしょう。

最初にこの作品を聴いたのは、確か北京だった記憶がある。その後、上海・香港・台湾、さらにアメリカにも連れて行ってしまった。
強烈なメッセージというわけではないけれど、東南アジアや大連も登場し、あのころの欧米至上主義に対する、やわらかなアンチ・テーゼにはなっていたんだなぁと、いまにしてみると、そんなふうにも思える。

香港のジャンクも無くなってしまったし、大連ではアカシアよりも、奇妙な高層ビルが目立つこのごろ、この作品を聴きながら、密かな時間旅行を楽しんでいるのは、ぼく一人ではないと思う。
