『流線形’80』の発売は1978年11月でした。1980年代の音楽シーンを先取りするようなポップなアルバムに仕上がりました。
どの曲もシングルカットできるほどの完成度で、荒井由実時代の明るさに加え、より軽快さや物語性も加味し、アレンジの華やかさを加えた作品で、松任谷由実時代初期の傑作として今も語り継がれる名盤と言えるでしょう。

冒頭の「ロッヂで待つクリスマス」、「真冬のサーファー」等は、2年後の『SURF & SNOW』のアルバム・コンセプトの先駆けになったような曲です。

「埠頭を渡る風」、「キャサリン」は今でもよく歌われる曲ですね。目の前に情景がくっきりと浮かび上がるような視覚に訴える歌詞は秀逸で、印象的で感傷的なフレーズを持ったメロディの素晴らしさは、他のアーティストの追従を許さない完成度を誇っていました。

冬の淋しい情景を歌いこんだ「かんらん車」の情感豊かな世界もまたユーミンの感性の豊かさを表わした曲だといえるでしょう。松任谷正降のアレンジも静かで密やかな雰囲気を醸し出し、上質のサウンドを提供していますね。

そしてラストの歌詞が衝撃的な「12階のこいびと」も忘れられない1曲です。

時に、ユーミン24歳。まさしく「天才」という名に相応しいアルバムを世に輩出したと思っています。

彼女の初期の作品は特に詞がイメージ喚起力が強く、このアルバムはその魅力が遺憾なく発揮されている。
細かく見ていくと一曲一曲の質の高低はあるのだが、やや気を抜いたと思える「入江の午後3時」でも聴きこんで行けば自分の日本語表現が豊かになる実感が感じられる。
「埠頭を渡る風」は彼女のオールワークスを通して間違いなくＢＥＳＴ５に入る傑作。

「キャサリン」「かんらん車」も一度聴いただけでぐっと引き込まれるはずだ。
一曲一曲の個性が強すぎて、アルバムを通しての統一感が前作「紅雀」と比較してちぐはぐに感じられるのがやや難点か。

恋なんていうものを知り始めた頃に、ちょうどユーミンが彗星のごとく現れました。様々なシチュエーションがその時々にそのままぴったりくるユーミンのアルバムは必需品といってもいいほどでした。恋の輝きとか、切なさ、楽しさ、寂しさなどを詠みこんだ歌詞の世界が、とっても新鮮だったユーミンのサウンドにのって流れてくると、それだけで、どこか寂しくても満たされた気持ちでした。はじめてユーミンを聞いていた頃の思い出はキラキラと輝いています。流線形’８０は大好きなアルバムです。侘び、寂びの効いたフレーズは忘れられません。時代を歌う視線も、歌詞中に使われている道具立てもユーミンならでは。初期から中期へ入るユーミンの時代への先駆け的アルバムではないでしょうか。
