昭和ガメラ・シリーズ第3作。本作以降、湯浅憲明が本篇と特撮、両方の監督を務めることになるが、そのフットワークのよさが怪獣同士の空中戦のスピーディーさにも見事結びつき、結果としてシリーズNo.1の人気作品として君臨することにもなった。吸血鬼をモデルにしたかのようなギャオスも屈指の敵怪獣として今なお人気が高く、その後もしばしシリーズに登場。また、血を流し傷つくという悲壮感を漂わせながらも、子どもたちのため懸命に戦うガメラという、正義のキャラクターのイメージは、本作で決定づけられたとみていいだろう。（的田也寸志）
