江戸川乱歩の生誕100周年か何かで乱歩作品がかなりの数公開された95年？の作品のうちの1本で、全くヒットもしなかったと記憶してますが、自分の観た映画の中で最高傑作です。
監督は他はVシネのヤクザものとか撮ってる人みたいですが、この作品に関してはそういった要素を微塵も感じません。

全ては幻のようで、懐かしく、母親の体内のような静かな穏やかさに包まれて、でも果てが見えないような恐怖感もあり、乱歩の世界観をそのままよく表現出来ていると思います。

また音楽も現代音楽家・上野耕路氏の手による大正ロマン漂う「幻」という感覚をそのまま音にしてしまったかのような楽曲で映画にベストマッチして大変素晴らしいです。この時代にトリップしてしまいそうです。
観ていて画面に吸い込まれてしまいそうな位に不思議で幻想的で懐かしい感覚を味わえる唯一無二の作品だと思います。

このままこの映画が忘れられて行くのは勿体無いと思います。
テイストとしては北野武監督の作品（あの夏~やDollsあたり）に近い印象を受けますので、北野ファンなら好きかもしれません。

乱歩作品を映像化すると大抵ついてくるけれんみが全く無い。
夢とうつつの間をたゆたうような感じがすばらしい。
この監督が過去に「竜二」を撮っていたとはちょっと信じがたい。

　いまは孤独な生活を送る老人が、かつて彼が少年の頃に失踪した兄との思い出を回想する。兄は押絵の中の八百屋お七に恋し、双眼鏡のレンズを逆さまに構えたところから、絵の中の娘のもとへ行ってしまった。残された少年は、兄の妻と、兄が入ってしまった押絵を抱え、ふたり蜃気楼の見える街をめざすが。　
　江戸川乱歩生誕百年記念に制作されたなかの一作品で、実相寺昭雄監督の『屋根裏の散歩者』と同時上映されたようです。しかしメインはもっぱら『屋根裏〜』で、こちらは一日一回きりの上映だったとか。
　
　今しがた拝見した分ですっかりはまってしまいました。小話程度の尺だった原作が、ここまで緻密に再構築されたことに驚くばかりです。
　妻と弟、浮き世の全てを捨てて、押絵の中でお七と永遠に若く美しく補完されること選んだ兄と、その兄の妻からの愛を受けられないばかりに、兄の補完された押絵を捨て、現実に生き老ていった弟。劇中すべての人が、それぞれの蜃気楼を求め集う砂丘で、幻想の美を求め消えた兄と、現実の孤独に生きた弟は、そこになにをみたのか。
　飴屋法水のクラシカルな美貌と、浜村淳氏の壮絶な老い姿とが対峙する列車内での邂逅は圧巻です。砂丘に佇む人々の画には、もはやアンゲロプロスやらなにやらまで連想してしまう始末で、すっかり収集がつかなくなってしまいました。
　今までなんとなくで見るのを先伸ばしにしていたことが、ひどく悔やまれてならない、名作、かと。
