「峠のわが家」以降、矢野顕子はサウンド優先思考になっていて、詞曲とオケの一体感が希薄だったり、微妙に乖離していることがまま見られたと思います。特にアメリカに渡ってからはその傾向が顕著でした。スティーブ・フェローンの唯我独尊的ビシバシ・ドラミング、ウィル・リーのノリノリ・ベース、ジェフ・ボーヴァのスペイシーなシンセ・プログラミング、そして矢野本人の天真爛漫ボーカル。どれも単独ではカッコいいのですが、それぞれが勝手に自己主張しているように思え、サウンド的なまとまりが今ひとつなのです。
それがこのアルバムではウソのように解消していて、歌とオケの一体感が本当に見事です。各プレイヤーがやっていることはそれほど変わらないので、ミックスやエンジニアリングの面で、「矢野の声とバックのサウンドをいかにして融合させるか」という難問に対して真剣に取り組んだ成果だと思います。ボーカルとオケの融合は坂本龍一が不得手としていたことだと思います。この時期は関係を解消したことで精神的に相当なダメージがあったと思います。その反動を利用して音楽的に向上していくのが彼女の凄いところですね。

御案内させていただきます。最近は聞き惚れるということができる音楽は非常に少ない。だがこれは例外。確固たる個性とサウンド世界。確かにワンアンドオンリーなボイススタイル。かといって自分勝手なわがままなだけの音楽を創造しているわけではないところがさすが。聞き手のところに、音楽家からのメッセージを誠意を持って届けようとするふところの広さを常に感じられるところもグレート。ジェフボバ、スティーブフェローニー、ウイルリー、ギルゴールドシュテインなどの先鋭的な音楽家たちとのコラボレーションが化学反応を起こした瞬間。
