   1998年に発表された、松任谷由実のベストアルバム。恋人たちの定番として長らく親しまれている「恋人はサンタクロース」（1980年）、80年代に一世を風靡した“角川映画”の主題歌だった「守ってあげたい」（1981年）から、“トレンドメーカー”的もてはやされ方をした時期の代表曲と言える「ダイアモンドダストが消えぬまに」（1987年）や「リフレインが叫んでる」（1988年）、さらにはドラマ主題歌としてヒットした「真夏の夜の夢」（1993年）や「春よ、来い」（1994年）まで…。収録曲のタイトルをざっと見るだけでも、めまぐるしく変わる音楽シーンを見事に生き残ってきたこのアーティストの才能が計り知れるというもの。ポップなようで意外に深い“女の業”を感じさせるのもこの人ならではの味。なぜこの時期にベスト盤を？という質問の答えは、新曲として収録されたティン・パン・アレーとのコラボレーション2曲（DISC2<14><15>）に隠されているようだ。（剛吉若寸也）

毎年恒例となっていた新作の年末リリースがなかった98年末、その代わりに発表されたのがこのベスト盤だった。ティン・パン・アレーとの新曲を含む、聴きどころ満載の2枚組で、改めてユーミンのエネルギーを再確認。

素晴らしいメロディ、サウンド。ユーミンは昔から車で聴くのが、好きだった。色々、聴いてきたのだが、このベストは非常に、よく、まとめられていて聴きやすい。今でも、よく聴く。個人的には、埠頭を渡る風が、好きだ。高速を走ってる時に、かかると最高に気持ちいい。もちろん全曲、名曲なのだが。無駄がない。懐かしい、守ってあげたい、からダンデライオン、リフレイン…数えたら、きりがない程の楽曲には、日本の音楽の歴史が、いっぱい詰まっている。今後の期待としては、呉田軽穂で、松田聖子に提供してる楽曲をセルフカバーして欲しい。アルバム一枚、作れるほどの名曲が、たくさんあるから。

「守ってあげたい」「青春のリグレット」「ノーサイド」「ＤＥＳＴＩＮＹ」･･･今聴くと本当に懐かしい曲目です。
特に７０年代中頃から８０年代、ユーミンは日本のポップスシーンを常にリードしてきました。メロディメーカーとしての資質、女性の微妙な心理を言葉巧みに生き生きと描いた歌詞は本当に素晴らしいものがあると思います。彼女のいいところは決して暗くならず、ジメジメとしないところ。この点が私はとても好きな理由の一つなのです。こうして彼女はシンガーであると同時に、他に追随を許さないほど、本当に素晴らしいソングライターでもあるわけです。
さて、このアルバムは松任谷由実名義で出された曲をターゲットにベスト編集されたものです。
ここに収められた曲は上記の曲を含め３０曲、漏れてしまった曲にも名曲は数知れずあると思いますが（個人的には「まぶしい草野球」や「入江の午後３時」「夕闇をひとり」はぜひ入れてほしかった）、アルバムや年代的なバランス上、概ね代表曲と呼ばれるに相応しい名曲が選曲されていると思います。彼女の曲になじみの薄い、特に若い人たちにぜひ聴いていただきたいものです。
なお、このアルバムと対をなすのが荒井由実時代のベスト「Super Best Of Yumi Arai」なので、ぜひこちらも聴いてみてはいかがでしょうか。十代の彼女の瑞々しい感覚が輝いていますよ。

松任谷由実時代のベスト・アルバムとも言えるこの『Neue Musik』に収録されている「守ってあげたい」「恋人がサンタクロース」「時をかける少女」「DESTINEY」「埠頭を渡る風」「リフレインが叫んでる」「青いエアメイル」「春よ,来い」の曲を聴いていますと、リアルタイムで聴いてきた当時の思い出まで蘇ってきます。今聴いても、新鮮なサウンドと印象的な歌詞を持つ音楽の玉手箱のようなアルバムです。

ユーミンの音楽自体は完成度の高いもので、今なお新鮮な響きを感じ取れるものばかりです。曲の水準は相当高く、時代をリードしていたのは間違いありません。目の前に情景がくっきりと浮かび上がるような視覚に訴える歌詞は秀逸で、印象的で感傷的なフレーズを持ったメロディの素晴らしさは、他のアーティストの追従を許さない完成度を誇っていました。

ユーミンの音楽の特徴は、時代の空気を感じ、新しい流行を作り出していくエネルギーを持っていたところだと思います。
音楽がファッションになり、ライフスタイルにしていった偉大なコンポーザーだという評価も当てはまると思います。

彼女は松任谷由実として、日本の音楽の頂点に今なお君臨し、燦然とした輝きは衰えることをしりません。Ｊ-ＰＯＰの中で彼女ほど長い年月、多くの人から愛され続けている人もいないと思います。
