心の師匠、「横森先生」をご紹介させていただきます。これを読むと、「農業」と「百姓」の違いがわかります。この本は特に変わった農法について解説しているわけはなくて、横森さんの自分史です。農業とは職業を意味していて、百姓とはその人の生き様を示しているということを先生から学びました。本当にすばらしい方です。

＜エピソード＞今年の１月に先生に講演をお願いいたしましたが、「私は十分農業で儲かったから、講演料はいりません。今まで多くの人にお世話になったので、こうやって講演することで少しでも皆さんのお役に立てればいいから・・・恩返しです。」とおっしゃって、講演料も交通費も受け取られませんでした。講演の中では「自分ばかりが儲けることを考えずに、相手に儲けさてあげることを考えないと、人はついてきてくれません。」とおっしゃいました。先生はこのマーフィー理論を百姓という人生の生き様の中から、学ばれたのだと思いました。

私は兼業農家の長男であるが今は実家を離れてサラリーマンをやっている。なぜ農業をやらないのか？それは農業に夢をもてなかったからである。この本を読んで農業に夢を持つ人が増えるのではないかと思う。章立てとしては著者の体験談で進んで行くが、その所々に日本の農業の問題点、農協の間違い、農業行政の怠慢などが指摘されており農家を取り巻く環境を鋭く指摘している。私自身これらの指摘は的を得たものであると実感できるし、農業に縁の無かった人でも農業事情が容易に想像できるものであろう。さらに国内のだけでなく海外の農業事情も触れられており視野の広さをうかがわせる。これから農業を志す人にぜひ読んで欲しい一冊である。

虫の害や病気から農産物を守るために農薬は使われてきた。が、そのために安全ではない農作物も多くなってきた。そこで安全を売り物にした「有機無農薬野菜」も増えてきた。著者の横森さんは、なんでもかんでも無農薬、無化学肥料がいいと言っているわけではない。自らの土地の土を調べ、野菜の種類ごとに適した土を作るために、堆肥や木酢液をうまく使い、農薬などは最小限に止めることで、安全な野菜を計画的に栽培でき、これからの日本においても、健全に農業を「経営」できると言っている。
横森さんの作ったレタスを、はたけで食べてみたいなあ。
