　本書は1614年に『名声』というパンフレットによって､ヨーロッパ思潮の表面に自ら名乗り出た『薔薇十字団』について､フランセス･イエィツ女史が､歴史家としての観点より記した書物である。この団体は､現在でも模倣者が出るほどの人気と､神秘主義者やその愛好家には､たまらないイマージュを与えつづけているが､小生のレヴュー『魔術的ルネサンス』で記したように､女史はこの時代の｢希薄と考えられている精神史｣を解明しようとしている。
　さて本書の構造は、(1)事件･事実のピックアップ(2)解釈(3)主張のまとめ、という要素からなり、まとめの役割を与えられている第16章まで、(1)と(2)を順次繰り返す。構成としては、ジェームズ一世の王女エリザベス(1596-1662)とフリードリヒ五世(1590-1632)の結婚という、二国間の連合構想という視点から、ハイデルベルク(独)宮廷の文化環境へと切り込み、｢薔薇十字｣文書と背景の考察、ヨーロッパ各地への波及、そしてまとめへと一気に流れてゆく。論証を支え、批判的検討に耐えると思われる原注･訳注･図版･文献･系図･年譜も示されている。
　小生のレヴューする書物は､先のイマージュを抱く方には余りお勧めできないものばかりだが､本書は異なる。女史の書物はいずれも推理小説のように読みやすく､刺激的なのが持ち味だが､特に本書は､先ごろベストセラーとなった『ダ･ヴィンチ･コード』(D･ブラウン著)に興奮した方などに一層楽しめるにちがいない。楽しむヒントは､引用書の｢下巻にある人物リストを覚えておく｣。また生粋の愛好者には､『名声』の全文が付されている点にくすぐられるのではないだろうか。小生は､ヨーロッパ知識人のネットワークについて獲られる点が多かった。
　ともかく､女史の研究､対象とした時代､さらにこの運動と運動発生環境等いずれかに興味を持つ方には､良い書物だ。

中世ヨーロッパを熱狂させた「薔薇十字団」とは？

そんな疑問を彼女はこの本で回答しよう、と試みているのではないか。

彼女の薔薇十字団への心酔ぶりは痛み入った。また、学者らしく、薔薇十字の起源から、民衆の熱狂、さらに衰退までを同じモチベーションで書かれている。とくにフランスと薔薇十字団の関連、フリーメーソンと薔薇十字団についての章は個人的には気に入っている。

図版は基本的（有名）なものが収録されている。

付録として、「信仰告白」および「名声」が付いているのも何気にうれしい。
