私は「熱狂的」ガンダムファンではない。昔を思い出して購入した程度だ。しかし、一読してみて驚いた。ファースト・ガンダムTVシリーズ、当たり前なのだろうが、企画の段階で著者は全部を見通していたのだ。シリーズの骨格を書き留めた直筆走り書きのメモが本書に掲載されている。読み進めることで、ガンダムのコンセプトが素描から何度も練り直され肉付けされていく思考過程を追体験できるだろう。

ファーストガンダムの企画段階から、富野監督が何を思い、何をこの作品に託そうとしたか、何を人に伝えようとしてつくりあげていったかがよくわかる。それは感動すらおぼえる。当時小学1年だった自分には難しかったがそれでも富野監督の意図したことはおぼろげにではあるが感じていた気がする。
