　特に戦後の日本オーケストラ界をリードした指揮者の一人、故・朝比奈隆氏の数ある本に必ずと言って良いほどに登場し、それによって名の伝わった感のある、その師匠：エマヌエル・メッテルを中心にすえて、大正から昭和初期の、着々と太平洋戦争へと向かってゆく日本の政治と、どこか爛熟した感のある庶民文化の背中合わせになったような、危うい時代：両大戦間日本のクラシック音楽界を通じたワン・シーンを描いた力作ではあると思います。深みという点ではいまひとつですが、そこそこ幅を広くとって描き出していると言えそうです。ただ、ノンフィクションに分類されるものによくあるような、いささかクサいようなところも時折みられます。著者はマスコミ出身ということですが、良くも悪くもそれを感じさせるような記述のしかたがかいまみえるような気がします。
　個人的には、巻末にまとめられた演奏記録がとても興味深いですね。著者が時折触れる作曲者の国籍ばかりでなく、その当時における同時代性という点でも。それにしても、演奏関係では随分と資料が残されていたもので、さすがですね。
　本文が400頁を超える大部な本ですが、さほど苦労なく読みとおせると思います。
