フォン・ノイマンの生涯と彼が創始したゲーム理論の発展を、米ソ冷戦の状況と重合わせて描いたドキュメンタリーです。

世界で最も頭のよい人物と評されたフォン・ノイマン。一度読んだ本は、諳んじることができたといいます。彼が設計したコンピュータの計算を、検算して確かめたのも、彼自身だったそうです。

ゲーム理論の基礎やその展開についても、解説がつくされています。ゲーム理論の入門書としても、十分役立つ内容でしょう。360ページと決して薄い本とはいえませんが、一気に読めます。

フォン・ノイマンの生涯、ゲーム理論の基礎、原爆開発に関わった科学者、冷戦の戦略面が主な話題。これらの話題が継ぎ目なく、読みやすく、しかも中身のしっかりある内容としてまとまっている。ゲーム理論の基礎と囚人のジレンマが主に読みたい内容だったが、フォン・ノイマンの伝記的部分や、ランド研究所の誕生／研究内容に関する章も楽しめた。2日であっという間に読了。

ゲーム理論に関しては、ゲーム理論でいうところの「ゲーム」とは何かという基礎に始まり、この理論が形成、注目された経緯が説明され、フォン・ノイマンのミニマックス定理、囚人のジレンマ、囚人のジレンマの各種バリエーション（ゲーム）、アクセルロッドの業績等々がカバーされている。例が豊富で、図表の数も適度。生物種の協調（共生）をゲーム理論の視点で説明するとどうなるかという部分は特に刺激的だった。

約360ページというページ数は、決して読みやすいとは言えない。しかし、それを読みやすくしている要因は、フォン・ノイマンの生涯を追いつつ、第二次世界大戦の原爆制作の秘話、冷戦時代の米ソ対立をも平行して書かれている点であろう。また、巷に出回っている「ゲーム理論」の類の本を網羅していることを鑑みると、この一冊が基礎論的要素をなしながらも、様々な視点からも書かれているという点は、はずせない一冊である。我々は、ゲーム理論に限らず、日々なんらかのジレンマと格闘しながら生活しており、そのジレンマにいかに向き合っていくか、特に興味深いのは、我々の生活におけるジレンマは感情という、人ならではの切ってもきれないものが同居しているが故に、判断を難しくしているという点である。その感情を脇に置いて、事実だけを見つめることで、解決そのものが意外と簡単に片付くという筋道は目からうろこであった。巷の新書を読むのもいいが、この一冊が全てを網羅していることを考えると、この一冊で十分ともいえる。
