クーンの提起したパラダイム概念の含意には確かに認知科学的に興味深い点がある。すなわち、いかにして科学者はパラダイムの観点から見たいものだけを見てそれ以外を見落とすことができるのか、と。

ミンスキーやピアジェといった認知科学の築いてきた諸概念がパラダイム概念の洗練に寄与できると強調する本書は科学社会学関係本の中でもかなり特異な内容。基本の話の筋は、科学者の認識の背景となるパラダイムの概念は認知科学が明らかにしてきた人間の認知機構の背景としての世界モデルの概念と同型である、パラダイム概念は科学内部の細分化された専攻分野の多元性という現代科学社会学の知見を受けて拡張されるべきだ、認知科学の現代的動向は認識を規定する世界モデルの多元性を明らかにしている、科学的認識の認知科学こそ現在必要なのだ、といった感じでしょうか。

パラダイム論では素朴で漠然としていた認識とその枠組みとの関係について非常に明確な理論言語によってその心理学的メカニズムを仔細に解明するその様は圧巻。あまりに心理学的で少しついていけなくなるところもありますが、事例として分析されているハーベイの血液循環の発見過程が非常に興味深く一読の価値あり。パラダイム概念の精緻化という研究コンセプトは他にも例えば野家啓一氏の『科学の解釈学』とも同じですが、野家氏は果敢にも、クーン自身がパラダイム概念の比喩的解説のために「ウサギ-アヒルの図形」を持ち出していることを批判し、パラダイムの本質を誤解させるものだと断じているのに対して本書の著者ドゥ・メイはむしろ「ウサギ-アヒルの図形」の認知科学的分析を重視しているという両者の対照的なパラダイム概念精緻化の方向性に注目です。
