例えば、ここに男がいる、女かもしれない、日々鬱々として楽しまぬ毎日を過ごしている、今夜も意に添わない仕事から帰宅すれば、部屋に充満し張り付いたような孤独に向き合うことになる、男には形は分からぬが、自身が何者かである、もしくは何者かになりたい、という強い願望がある、

ある時、男はネットを知る、ネットには書き込みという機能があることも知る、男はそこで自身が何者かになれそうな気分を獲得する、あとはお決まりのコースであろう、ネット利用時間は飛躍的に増大する、いずれは自宅からのネット接続では飽き足らなくなろう、ネット・カフェ巡りも日課になる、カフェ内のテーブルの移動さえ頻繁になるかもしれない、さて、それで自分自身は果たして何処に存在するのか？

インターネットは衆知のように軍事目的で開発された、したがって当初より窮極の「機能」が第一目的だったはずなのだが、軍人が職務執行に利用するほどの明確な目的意識を持てない一般にまで開放が進んだ結果、さまざまな混乱が生じていることは否定しようのない事実である、

すでにネットを知ってしまった我々は知らなかった以前にはもう戻れない、本書のようなアプローチがこれから沢山必要にならないことを祈りたいものである、

心理学を専攻した人にとっては大した内容ではないかもしれないが、門外漢にとってはなかなか面白い。2chや学校裏サイトがどのようにして暴走するかを明らかにしてくれる。
応用範囲は、このような一般人が使う書き込みサイトの暴走だけではなく、文字だけでのコミュニケーションで管理をしなければならないSOHOや、情報共有ツールがなぜ使い勝手に欠けるのか、その対策までに及ぶと思われる。
