スーザン・S・ヘンドリックとクライド・ヘンドリックは「エスキモーの雪の語彙に比べ愛の語彙が乏しいのは、我々が愛という概念を充分に洗練できていないからではないのか？」という問いから、愛について社会心理学的研究を行ってきた。本書は、彼らの10年にわたる愛に関する研究の成果をまとめた 『Romantic Love (Sage Series on Close Relationships)』の邦訳である。

原書の題名に対し、邦訳名が 『「恋愛学」講義』とやや「お硬い」題名になっていることが示すとおり、本書は「わかりやすい恋愛心理学の入門書」などではなく、「恋愛」の研究に関する社会心理学の研究書である。全体で200ページ弱のコンパクトな本でありながら、その内容は重厚で、生物学、社会学、歴史学的立場からの恋愛の研究から、恋愛に関する社会心理学の最新研究、そしてそれらの研究成果を応用した実際の現象解析（現象とはつまり恋愛のプロセスなわけだが）に至るまでの豊富な内容をカバーしている。これだけ本格的に真正面から「恋愛」の研究を扱った本は他に類を見ないであろう。

本書はいわゆる「専門書」ではあるが、扱っている対象が「恋愛」であるため、たとえば「愛のあるセックスと愛のないセックスの違いとは？」「恋愛と愛との違いとは？」「男が遊びの感覚で恋愛をするのは何故か？」などが客観的に淡々と解明されていき、読んでいて思わずニヤリとしたり、ハッとさせられたりする。その意味で専門家にも一般の人にもすすめられる1冊である。（別役 匝） --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

本書で取り上げられているのはあくまで「恋愛」のみであるが、誰もが気に留める恋愛をここまで深く掘り下げて考えた本書は社会心理学の魅力を示しているといえる。
恋愛には情熱的なエロス、偏執的なマニア、友愛的なストーゲイ、遊びの愛といえるルーダス、実利的なプラグマ、愛他的なアガペーの６つの類型が存在する。
…と書くと巷にあふれる、恋愛心理学の本を読んでいるかのようだが、本書が面白いのは大規模な調査など社会心理学の手順をきちんと踏んでいるところだ（研究成果は論文にもなっている）
また、生物の生存戦略から恋愛を考えた論考もあり興味深かった。

恋愛研究の文献検索の入り口としても役に立つ。近年の諸外国の研究が紹介されているので、ここから、多くの恋愛の先行研究にたどり着けると思える。
