フロイト以降の精神分析療法では中立性というものが治療の基本として重要視されてきているが、臨床上治療者の自己開示性・開放性がどのように治療に影響を及ぼすのかについて書かれて専門書。自己開示は治療的には有効な面も多いが、逆転移に基づく欲求充足的行為や治療の行き詰まりやどう反応してよいのかわからずに開示することは治療的にも禁忌とせねばならないことが述べれ例ている。しかし、共感的な絆や受容や信頼を確立するするため、そして分かち合いたいという意図の自己開示は治療的にも価値があるとしている。
本書では「自己開示」を治療場面における治療者からの情報伝達を意味し、「開放性」は治療者の性格や特性としてどれくらい体験に開かれているのかを意味している。
