いわずとしれた動物行動学の古典。今日その立論には批判も多いが、未踏の学問領域を開拓したローレンツの主著の一つとして、今後も読み継がれるであろう一書。ちなみに筆者が最も蒙を啓かれたのは、次の一文。「個人的友情をむすぶ能力があって、しかも攻撃性をもたないという動物は、まだひとつもしられていない」（同書２１０頁）。筆者は専門家ではないので、その学問的正否を論ずることはできないが、素直に解すれば、「人は愛情をもち得るが故に攻撃的になり得る」ということであろう。（即ち、個人的友情を結び得るが故に敵対的感情も生ずるという逆説！）だとすれば、人間から攻撃性がなくなることはないのではないだろうか。どこにこの隘路を止揚する途があるのか。興味は尽きない。

まず、第一章のサンゴ礁の魚の攻撃に関する記述からして既に間違っていることが指摘されています。その他、行動が「種の保存」のために発達したというのも基本的には間違っているとされています。個体（遺伝子と言う説もある）のために行動は進化するのであって、淘汰の単位は種ではなく個体にたいするものであるというのが今の主流です。この本の理論は基本的には既に古いものなのですが、この本のどこが現在の進化、行動学と食い違っているのかを考えながら読むと勉強になると思います。その意味では読む価値ありです。あと、行動学を有名にした人の本を読んでみるって意味もありますが。

生物学はとても人間くさい学問ですので、ダーウィンを例に出すまでもなく、その社会科学に与える影響力は無視できません。生物学者の中にも、生命とか生物について語るだけでは満足できず、人間にも言及しようとする人がいます。コンラート・ローレンツもその一人で、彼は魚・鳥・動物などの研究結果を踏まえて人間の＜攻撃本能＞について考察しています。動物は人間的感情を持っている、と考えているローレンツは、動物と人間を基本的に同列に扱います。ただし、その＜擬人化＝拡大解釈？＞には様々な方面からの批判も加えられているようです。

面白いのは、本書でしばしばフロイトが参照されていることです。ローレンツが様々な動物たちを観察して到達した結論がフロイトに似ている、というのは大変興味深いことだと思います。人間の攻撃本能は取り除くことができない、とか、まして、攻撃欲を持たない動物には友情を生み出す能力がない、といった意見に衝撃を覚える人がいるかもしれませんが、フロイトの観察によっても似たようなことが言われています（フロイトによれば＜死の本能＞が外へ向かえば破壊行動になり、内に向かえば超自我＝良心の形成に寄与します）。本書に登場する愛らしい動物たち以上に、なんとも不可解な＜人間＞のほうに興味を持たれた人には、「文化への不満」（フロイト著作集3所収）も読んでみることをお勧めします。
