昭和五十年頃を舞台に傑作「麻雀放浪記」のその後を描いた短編集。「外伝」とあるので、「麻雀放浪記」の登場人物達の隠れたエピソードを並べたものかと予想したが、作者の狙いは別の所にあったようだ。色川武大名義の作品も一つ入っている。

ドサ健なども出てくるが、「麻雀放浪記」の"読む者に手に汗を握らせる膨大なエネルギー"は感じられず、むしろ坊や哲(=阿佐田哲也)の当時の枯淡とした雰囲気(=生き方)を感じさせる出来となっている。勿論、麻雀を初めとする勝負の世界が物語の背景にあるのだが、「麻雀放浪記」のように"読む者の血を滾らせる"ものではなく、さりげない描写の中に勝負の綾と厳しさを滲ませるという体裁になっている。

当時の阿佐田さんの年齢に相応しい渋さを感じさせると共に、勝負の業をあくまで追求した阿佐田ファン必読の短編集。

イーシャンテン二巡目に中を引いてきた。白を泣いているが初は暗刻だ。対家が上がりパイを捨てたが小三元で上がってもオーラス間近なのでトップは取れない。見過ごして一巡目下家が中を切った。ポン。私らここで中は切らない。オーラス間近では慎重を期した方がいいのだ対家が中を捨てて大三元を和了。４万８千点。南４局は上家が安上がりして私の逆転トップで終わった。棋譜を見てなるほどと思った。下家は九連宝燈でイーシャンテンだった。麻雀のルールは公平ではない。簡単な大三元も技術を要する九連宝燈でも役万は役万。結局最後はツキなのだ。若い頃に麻雀から足を洗って良かったと思う。続けていたら身も心もボロボロになっていたことだろう。

小三元でテンパイした。二巡目に上家が振り込んだが見送った。オーラスが近い。小三元で上がってもトップは取れない。見送って二巡目が出た。迷わずポンして一巡目に対家が振り込んだ。大三元。一気にトップに立つ。オーラスは下家が安上がりして半チャンを終了した。大三元は役万の中でも比較的簡単にできる。食い下がりもないから泣いていけるが普通は誰も放銃しない。対家はよほど大きな手かあるいはトップを守りたかったのだろう。私はこれ以上このメンツでガメルのをやめた。レベルが違いすぎるのだ。編集者に、じゃあ、これでと帽子をとってその場を去った。後日棋譜を見せてもらったときなるほどと思った。対家は九連宝燈イーシャンテンだった。役万というのは何かを犠牲にしないとできないのだと改めて思った。
