   事故で両親を亡くしたジェームズ・ヘンリー・トロッター少年は、スポンジおばさんとスパイキーおばさんという2人の意地悪なおばさんと一緒に暮らさなくてはならなくなった。3年が経つころには、「これほどかわいそうな少年はいない」ほどに。そんなある日、ジェームズは、深緑色のスーツを着た1人のおじいさんから、魔法の水晶玉の入った袋をもらう。それは、みじめなジェームズの生活を永遠に変えてしまうものだという。ところが、ジェームズはあやまって水晶玉を庭の枯れた桃の木にこぼしてしまう。しかし、これがジェームズの冒険の始まりだった。なんと枯れていた桃の木から1個の桃がぐんぐん成長し始めたのだ。やがてジェームズは巨大化した桃の中に入ると、意地悪なおばさんたちのもとを離れ、新しい世界へ出発する。ジェームズは元気な仲間と友だちになった。バッタにミミズ、クモのおねえさんにムカデ。みなそれぞれ自分の歌をもっている。

   ロアルド・ダールの作品は想像力豊かで、登場するキャラクターたちもみな実にゆかいだ。読んで聞かせる親も飽きることはないし、子どもたちも何度も「読んで！」とせがんでくるだろう。本書をペーパーバック版として復刻するにあたっては、レーン・スミス（『The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairy Stupid Tales』や『The True Story of the Three Little Pigs』のイラストレーター）の手による白黒の鉛筆画が新たに書き加えられた。ディズニー社によるアニメ映画は、本書のイラストをもとに製作されている。これだけは断言できる――『James and the Giant Peach』（邦題『おばけ桃の冒険』）は児童文学の最高傑作だ。（9~12才児向け） --This text refers to the ハードカバー edition.

ロアルド・ダールが始めて子供向けに書いた物語。1961年、すでに作家としての名声を得ていたダールだったが、この物語の出版をきっかけに「これが天職だと悟った」という。「チャーリーとチョコレート工場」に代表される後のポップで楽しいお話と比べると少しまじめ過ぎるような気もするが、この記念すべき第一作には父親ダールの我が子に対する切なる思いが込められているようだ。意地悪なおばさん二人から逃れたジェイムズとバッタ、クモ、ミミズ、ムカデ、テントウムシ、カイコ、ホタルが巨大な桃に乗って繰り広げる冒険とは？どこかアンニュイな雰囲気漂うレーン・スミスのイラストもかわいい。

彼の作品は好きでこれが5冊目ですが、この作品が一番退屈で、最後まで読むのが苦痛でした。
他の作品に比べて展開が読めるせいだとおもいます。他の作品（児童向けで言うと「Ｍａｔｉｌｄａ」や「チョコレート工場」）は最後どうなるか分からない展開ですが、この作品は最初から劇的なストーリーが望めない感じ。
で、結局その通りのエンディングです。
彼の作品を読むのであれば、これ以外のものをお勧め、かなぁ。

２人のおばさんに　いじめられて　こき使われて育てられたジェームスが　

ある不思議な出会いを　きっかけに　冒険を始めます。へんてこな仲間と旅するうちに　”みんな　違うから　いいんだ。”と思ったり　友達に　頼りにされるうちに、”ぼくにできることが　あるんだ。”と　徐々に自分らしさにきづき、自信をつけていきます。楽しいことなんかないんだ・・・とあきらめていたジェームスが、トラブルつづきの旅の中、あきらめずに　自分を信じて　仲間を信じて　前進していこうとするところが　いじらしいです。
ジェームスに　笑顔が輝く瞬間、その瞳には　たくさんの友達が映るのです。
