梨木さんの文章は、いつもしんとした水面のようだと思います。
テンポよくさらさらとは流せない。
このエッセイを読んでつくづく思ったのですが、とても上質な翻訳文のように感じるのです。
思考したことをことばにするときに、たくさんの語彙の中から選り分けているのでしょう。
そのために、いつの間にか真剣に向き合い、
ことばを咀嚼して自分の中に染み込ませようとしてしまいます。

明らかに「静」のひとだとばかり思っていた彼女が、
カヤックという大きな「動」の趣味を持っていることに驚きました。
自然へのまなざしや対峙の仕方は、作品によく表れていると感じることが多く、
やはり日々の生活の中から生まれて来る感覚やことばたちなのだと思いました。

ほんとうはこんな慌ただしい時期に読んじゃいけない文章です。
ひとりになって、沈思黙考したくなりますから。

　2005年９月〜2006年２月にわたってWebちくまに連載されたエッセー「水辺にて」に、書き下ろしのエッセーを加えた一冊。≪水辺の遊びに、こんなにも心惹かれてしまうのは、これは絶対、アーサー・ランサムのせいだ――長いこと、そう思い続けてきた。≫の文章から滑り出して行きます。
　静かな、透明感のある文章。北の辺境の国から届いた絵葉書を読んでいくような感じで、頁をめくっていきました。時々ふっと、英国の作曲家ヴォーン・ウィリアムズの音楽を思い浮かべました。
　太陽系の境界を今しも抜けようとしているだろう宇宙船ボイジャー１号のこと。スコットランドはロッホ・ローモンドの辺り、美しい幻のように素敵だったマナーハウスの光景のことなど･････。
　とりわけ印象に深く残ったのが、「発信、受信。この藪を抜けて」の文章でした。≪ひたすら発信し続ける孤独なクジラ≫のことから、ある写真家のカヤックにまつわる話へと流れ下り、そこから冒頭のスペース・デブリ（宇宙塵、宇宙のゴミ）へと一回転して戻ってくるエッセー。心にひたひたと満ちてくる味わいが素晴らしかった。しんとした胸に、かーんと響くものがありました。
　また、カヤックの写真が魅力的なカバーの装丁。本書の中に登場する星野道夫さんの一冊『森と氷河と鯨』（世界文化社）の中の写真を彷彿させるもの。素敵だと思いました。

「西の魔女が死んだ」などで知られる梨木さんですが、個人的には小説よりもエッセイでこそ輝きを放つ作家さんだと思います。
行間から滲み出る瑞々しい感性、ささいなことから物語を紡ぎ出す鋭い感受性は、読んでいて心地よいです。

また本文の中では２箇所ほどで、イラクで殺害された青年についてのわずかな言及があるのですが、私が特に感心したのはここでした。

”（混乱のイラクの地で、その旅と人生の最後を迎えることになった若い日本人の男の子のことを、今思い出す。私が同じ事をするかどうかは別にせよ、私の行動の延長線上に彼の行動はある。彼が非難される場面があれば、私はいつでも彼の側にあって共にそれを受けなければ、と思っていた。彼を非難する前にそもそももっと非難すべきことがあるだろう、とも。が、これはまた別の話だ）”

といったものです。

恐らく、（擁護するか非難するかの違いはあれど）私を含めた多くの日本人は彼の死を１ニュースとして『消費』しただけだったのに、梨木さんは折にふれて彼のことを思い出している。
「追悼」とはまさにこのことではないか、そして私たちのどれだけが見ず知らずの人の死を追悼しているのか、とほとほと感心し、自分が恥ずかしくなりました。
（カヌーのことに全く触れないレビューですいません）
