お金のはらむ問題点を丁寧に指摘しつつ、お金で成り立っている社会やグローバリズムを安直に批判して良い気になっている勢力の精神がいかにお金に蝕まれているかも同時に指摘する、なかなかに痛快な書物です。

「貨幣」の持つ危険性や、それをめぐるさまざまな問題とそれへの対策の検討がわかりやすく書かれている本。
賠償システムや信用の問題、学問や芸術の尺度、さらにはイラク人質事件からロールズの論の検討などと、いろいろと面白いことが書かれている。

だが、引用が、特に小説からのが、やたらと多く読みにくい。
「ヴェニスの商人」は短編名作だからまあいいとしても、「ファウスト」は名前だけが多いだろうし、「海辺のカフカ」「蹴りたい背中」「蛇にピアス」「アッシュベイビー」あたりは読んでいない。
そして、読んでいない小説から、「この部分からは、こういうことが読み取れる」と書かれても困る。
そういう批評は、読んでいない小説にたいして行われても「で？」としかならない。
「「不自由」論」や「「分かりやすさ」の罠」のように、哲学者の引用であれば読んでいても知識が増え楽しいのだが・・・

そうしたところで星一つ減点。
いいテーマ設定だけに惜しい。

お金はものごとを計測する道具である。民事訴訟などを見ると、お金で計れないようなものにも、計測結果が与えられていることが分かる。この考えを推し進めれば、「私」という人間においてもお金による取引可能性があると本書は述べる。

「私」がお金で計測された先には、精神的なものとされがちな正義概念の拠り所としてお金を無視できないと結ぶ。
