浩瀚なスミス伝。原著は高い評価を得ている。しかしこの翻訳はとても読めたものではない。なぜこのようなわかりにくい日本語になるのか。訳者が苦労したことは詳しい注記などによってわかるが、そうした労力の割には､基本的な訳文があまりにも不自然な日本語になっていて、読書意欲をそぐ。それにしても「グラーズゴウ」とか「コリッジ」などという妙な表記にこだわらず、もっと読みやすい日本語にすることにその労力を傾けるべきだった。労力のみに星二つ。
