茶道の知識がない私も大変興味深く読むことができる本。
茶道の奥深さだけでなく、著者の美を追求する半生、美をとおしての親子の絆、平易な言葉で綴られている。

草月流創始者、勅使河原蒼風の長男として生まれながら、絵を学び、欧米文化に魅せられ、アバンギャルドへと傾倒していく著者。
日本の美に興味が移ったのは、四百年以上前に作成された古田織部の茶碗に出会ってからである。

茶道にかかわる内容は、知識がない私でも理解できるくらいだから、一部の人は物足りなさを感じるかもしれない。
しかし、茶道の素晴らしさは、十分伝わる内容である。
初心者、未経験者に、茶道の導入書として是非お薦めしたい。

父親の勅使河原蒼風もこの本に時々登場する。
彼は、著者に生け花を教えることもしないし、絵を描きたいと美術学校に進学することを反対もしない。
絵を描くことは、生け花に束縛された彼が果たせなかった夢だったのだ。
そして、ここから親子の芸術論は花開くことになる。
家にあまりいなくて、”こわい人”だった父親との真の交流が始まるのである。
勅使河原蒼風が著者のことを書籍に書いたと引用してある文章は感動的でさえある。

もし、岡倉天心　「茶の本」を未読の方がいたら、あわせてお薦めしたい。
