　本書によると、心理学分野における援助行動研究は、キティ・ジェノビーズ事件（1964年）を1つのきっかけとして、1970年代初めに急速に増加したそうだ。日本の心理学界においても約10年遅れで研究数が増加し始めたとのことである。

　本書は、日本で研究が増え始めてからほぼ10年後の1987年の時点で、援助行動に関する心理学研究を概観したもの。15人の著者が執筆を分担しており、援助行動・援助状況の分類、援助行動の意思決定モデル、援助行動・傾向の発達、援助行動を促進・抑制する状況的要因・個人的要因など内容は多岐に渡っている。

　研究急増の契機がキティ・ジェノビーズ事件であったため、最初期の援助行動研究をドライブした問いは「何故援助しないのか」であったようだ。本書では「適応上の不利さにも関わらず、他者を助ける傾向が人に備わっているのは何故か」という問いは扱われていない。また、脳科学の知見にもとづいた議論も一切なされていない。

　巻末に出版時までの主要文献（主に社会心理学・発達心理学）のリストがある。
