人間は「容姿」によって得したり損したり、それはまぎれもない事実です。本書は、社会的に少々タブーな領域を生物学の立場から「科学である」として考察します。このテーマ設定自体が本書の面白さを約束しているようなものです。
そもそも「美しい顔」とはなんなのか、なぜ、美しい顔が好まれるのか、少女マンガのありえない顔がなぜ「美しい顔」と認識されるのか、おもしろいテーマが満載です。
ただ、まだ研究段階のせいか、かなりの部分が仮説的な域に留まっています（だから、読者がいろいろ茶々を入れながら読むことが出来るので面白いともいえますが）。

ヒトの容貌・体型とその美観について、気になるさまざまな問題を生理学的に解く。生理学的な説明はだが題名どおり社会という視座からなされるもので、単に自己保存にとどまらないヒトの戦略が興味深く語られる。顔面の特徴についての通俗的な解釈を切ってゆく。眉毛は「汗止め」ではない。進化上失われた眉上突起の代用物である。肥満・ハゲ・鼻の形・肌の色などについても他説との検証を重ね、また日米との美観の比較（日本と北米しか想起できないあたり著者の見識の貧困さをうかがわせるが）を行う。なぜ日本人には「かわいい」ものが好まれ「欧米人」はその逆かというと、日本人の起源がシベリア型モンゴロイドであるという点にあり…。こういった考察の展開する第２部~第３部（７章から１５章）の前に、第１部で基礎概念を提示する。ここでも事例が豊富で、ヒトの形態について生物学とゲーム理論の知見で整理を行う。すべての人種がある一定の顔型および白色の皮膚を志向すると言う「美の元型」が挙げられる。かくヒト単位で考察する著者は、≪美人も美の基準も文化と時代によってさまざま≫式の根拠のない俗説などウ呑みにせず、文化の差はあれどヒト全体に共通する基準があるはずであると考える。それについて具体的に著者が示したもの自体はともかく、理念だけを取り出してみれば、「文化」で何事も説明しようとする旧態の安易さに対する新しい学識からの警鐘とみなせよう。議論そのものが有意義である。

人間の容姿容貌や、それへの好みが生物学的に
どんな意味をもつのかを考察。

「美人というものは、実はその容姿が
異常であるから美人なのでなく、
人間の平均値をもっとも良く充たすから美人だ。」とか、
「人は配偶者を選ぶ時に優しさよりも
容姿の美しさを選ぶことが生物学的に妥当」とか
意外な事実を教えてくれる。
