都会の一軒屋を借りて、２人の兄と従兄弟の兄たちと同居する女の子の物語。
風変わりの兄たちと繰り広げられる同居生活と会話のやりとりが奇妙でありながらも生活感があって飽きさせない。
夢ともうつつともつかない眠幻覚のような不思議な感覚に魅了される。

１９３１年に発表されていたというから多喜二「蟹工船」や横光「機械」とほぼ同じころ。１９６９年に見出され、現在再び評価が上がっている尾崎翠さんは、長らく「忘れられた作家」だったらしい。しかし本当に「忘れられた作家」は「忘れられた」ことさえ忘れられてしまうのですから、力があることは確実です。

一読後、即座にその力の存在には気付くのですが、どこがすごいのか判明としない奇妙な魅力のある小説です。主人公の少女は人間の「第七官」に響く詩を書きたいと上京して兄たちと同居するのですが、まず「第七官」なるものが分かっていないという奇妙さ。一応、「無意識」や「忘我の境地」や「我をも忘れる恋」や「物質の世界」といった人智を超えた感覚らしくはあるのですが、明確にはならない。しかも二人の兄は患者に恋した精神科医だったり、コケの恋を研究する研究者だったり。。。ぶっとんでます。それでいで文体はいたって普通で読みやすい。

自分が望んでいるものがわからないまま、手探りで、それでもいろんなことが起こる、すばらしい「彷徨」小説。「蟹工船」もある意味奇妙だけど、ここまでではない。傑作。
