最近ジャズピアノを初めて、その先生がエヴァンスの大ファンなので、エヴァンスとはどんな人だったんだろうと思って読んでみました。
華やかなピアニストとしての彼のイメージとはだいぶ違って、
光のあたる面ばかりではないんだなぁと思いました。
でも、「完璧」な人間味が感じられない彼のイメージが払拭されて、
人間らしい弱さみたいなのも感じられ、
天才も同じ人間だったと、何か親近感を覚えてしまいました。
エヴァンスを取り囲む人間関係なんかもわかるので、初心者の私にはとても勉強になりました。
エヴァンスが今、生きていたらなぁと、しみじみ思いました。。。

　偶々、本書を読む前に『ジョン・コルトレーン、『至上の愛の真実』』（アシュリー・カーン著）を読んだせいか、どうしてもエヴァンスと比較してしまわざるを得ない。両者もドラッグを常用していたが、片や断ち切って神の啓示を受け終身その身をジャズに捧げてその地位を生前に不動のものしたサックスプレーヤー。片やドラッグを断ち切れず、死ぬまでドラッグに溺れ神の啓示を見出すことができないまま打算と理想の確執を繰り返した不出世のピアニスト。命を削ってまでジャズの可能性と己の可能性を見出していくことが死への途と信じて、生を全うしたエヴァンスのリリシズムを本書通じて読者は知ることになる。命を賭してまで捧げられるジャズの物悲しさ、しかし雄々しき誇らしさを一平凡なリスナーは聴き取ることができるのである。そのことを本書は静かな語り口で伝えてくれる。もっともっとエヴァンスのことを知りたくなる一冊である。

エヴァンスの人生は、我々が想像する以上に過酷だった。
ドラッグ、父の死や恋人と兄の自殺、最良のパートナーだったラファロ
の事故死、当時のジャズ業界の生き馬の目を抜くような厳しい環境。
彼に安息の場があるとしたら、ピアノを弾いているときだけだったのか
も知れない。だからこそ、あのような繊細で危うい美を表現できたの
だろう。
あの美しさを表現するには、尊い犠牲が必要なのだ。
死に彩られた生は、この世のものとは思えないほど、美しいものを生み
出す。死に近いからこそ、生の美しさが目映く感じられる。
芸術家の業。
どんな苛烈なものでも表わさずにいられないという業。
彼も人間であることより、ピアニストであることを選んだひとだった。
