第一巻では調が固定されていましたが、ここでは、サブドミナントの七の和音、準固有和音、ナポリ二度、ドリア四度、五度の五度いわゆるドッペルドミナントを修得し、最後に近親転調とソプラノ課題を学びます。第一巻で学んだ知識だけではポピュラー音楽を含めて実際の楽曲を解析するのにかなり不充分ですが、ここで扱われている内容をマスターすれば、大体のことは網羅したことになるでしょう。二度、四度を除く副七の和音、三度、七度の和音、ドリア二度等は扱われていませんが（そのほとんどは第三巻で扱われます）、本書までの知識で応用でき、全く問題はありません。
この巻は、第一巻の第一転回ほどの難所はありません。一巻で学んだことが身に付いていれば、比較的スムースに学習が進むでしょう。一巻から比べると、音の扱いが自由になって、別売の実施集と異なった実施になることも多くなると思います。和声の配置・連結の可能性について色々考えさせられるでしょうが、押さえるべきポイントは、一巻から言われ続けている完全音程の扱いに気を配りながら、増音程進行や対斜に注意することくらいでしょうか。なお、減七のような不協和音への進行には対斜は禁じられていません。これを覚えておくと、実施の時に色々役に立つかもしれません。

この本は、『和声―理論と実習 (1)』の続編となっており、主に準固有和音や借用和音を扱っています。
第I巻で和声の基礎を学び、この第II巻ではより深い内容に入っていくので、第I巻をよく理解して
おかないとかなりツライです。
しかし、和声のおもしろさをこの本で再発見すること間違いないので、オススメの一冊です。

和声は画家が絵の具を混ぜて新しい色彩を得るように、作曲家の工夫と想像力で無限の可能性を引き出すものだと思う。しかし、この本では様々な規則を並べたてて、その中でのみ実習を進めるようになっている。確かにこういう取り決めをしておけば、この本を採用した学校の期末試験では採点はしやすいだろう。しかし、生徒の想像力は養えないではないか。古来より和声学と称する書物では少なからず学習上の決め事(つまり規則)を設けているのが普通で、確かにある程度はやむを得ないことではある。しかし、島岡氏のシリーズではこうした規則が徹底されすぎている。この本で示されている和音進行の可能性とか、バス定型などは現実の芸術作品に見られるもののほんの一部に過ぎず、実際には例外のオンパレードである。こうした点を踏まえてこの本を読むならばまだしも、初心者の人たちがこの本をバイブルのように捉えてしまうと彼らの想像力が伸びなくなってしまう気がしてならない。ちなみに、この本には実際の芸術作品の実例がひとつも載っていないが、本物の和声は優れた作品から直接学び取るのが最良の方法である。
