戦没学徒の遺稿を収め、いまなお多くの影響を与えている『きけわだつみのこえ』が、いかに政治的に利用され、歪曲されてきたかを批判するノンフィクション。

わだつみ会での権力を掌握しようとあまりに醜い派閥抗争が展開され、彼らの「こえ」を伝えるのではなく、政治的に利用することに主眼が移行してゆく過程を読む限り、彼らの「こえ」をいかに読むべきなのかということを痛切に考えざるを得なくなる。

本書によって、わだつみ会内部であまりにも非「民主的」な抗争が展開されたことをはじめて知ったわけだが、もちろん、このような抗争があるにしても『きけわだつみ』の価値を認めるに吝かではない。ただ、正義や理念はこちらにあるといった傲慢な視座が、彼らの「こえ」を曇らせていることだけは間違いないだろう。さらにいえば、こちらが絶対的に正しく、あちらは断罪されるべきといった、対話すら存在しないわだつみ会内部の抗争の性格が、戦前期において総力戦体制の正当化を担った言説とあまりにも似ていることに皮肉を感じざるをえない。おそらくわれわれは、彼らが「こえ」を発した場所と、今でもまったく同じところに存在しているのだ。

たしかに、これまでの「わだつみ」イメージを覆してくれる本だろう。だが、読み終わったあと味は良くなかった。とくに、わだつみ会の内紛についての記述は、一方のグループの立場に立っているようにも見える。どっちが正しいかではなく、そのような争いを生み出した社会的な背景のようなものへの考察があってもいい気がする。多くの関係者への取材を通して歴史を再構成するジャーナリスティックなセンスは著者の特長だと思うが、この本では、そのことが逆に限界にもなっているように思える。争いの当事者たちを、一歩引いて眺める視点があってもいいのではないだろうか。

　特攻隊員を含め、多くの戦没学徒の声を集めた「はずの」「純粋な」この本も、戦後の「進歩的文化人」の扇動によって、ゆがめられていたという事実を提示するこの本は、衝撃的であった。

　靖国神社問題について、私は、現時点で、まだ、意見が固まらないので論評を避けるが、少なくとも「靖国で会おう」といって絶望的な戦局の中で（そうとは知らされていなかったとしても）死地に赴いた方々は、あの戦争の善悪に対する判断の如何を問わず、「日本人として感謝すべき」存在であったことは「進歩的文化人」とて否定はしまい。

　そうであるならば、この、元は戦没学徒の遺書や手紙を集めた書物の取り扱いについては、なんら恣意的な変更は許されないはずである。彼らへの冒涜は止めてもらいたいと思った。

　「A級戦犯」という東京裁判史観を受け入れるか、東京裁判史観を別にしても結果責任として戦争指導者を靖国に祀ることの是非は議論するとしても、何の疑いもなく〜疑っていてもそれを隠して〜「靖国で会おう」と「日本」のために死地に赴いた人たちを尊敬しないで誰を尊敬するのか？

　左翼、右翼の問題ではないと思う。
