文芸春秋などに時々山本さんが書かれる文をいつも楽しみにしていた。何故か。歳をとっているからといってエライわけではないという亡くなった土光さんと似ている意見である。話が抽象的でなく、具体的である。オマケで生きていると言ってはばからず、説教口調ではない。山本さんの本はこの本が始めてだが、やはり期待に背かなかった。対談形態で、お相手は入社数年の女性らしいが、対談のギャップが微笑ましいだけではなく、相手を読者に見立てて考え方、理解度を推し量りつつ、相手に理解してもらうにはと当為即妙に話を進めていく。後書きの「深刻な話には笑いが必要」とはそのとおり。また後書きに曰く、対談相手は才媛と。私は育ちの良さと素直さで選んだような気がした。へ理屈こねる相手じゃ不愉快になるがそんなことがない。世の中全て戦争色だったなど、過去は全て暗いという見方は、そもそも日本人はそんなにタイプじゃないと感じていたが、そんなことはなかったことが、実例付きでよーく分かった。例えば、幕末に渡米した幕府の代表者達は背がちんちくりんなのに貴公子と当地の新聞で称えられ、今の日本人は何故そうでないのか。和漢の教養の雲泥の差である。何故「この国は」などと自国のことを言うようになってしまったのか。国語の教科書（や唱歌）に出てくる島崎藤村の大偽善者振りは知る人ぞ知るだが、仮面の下を見抜く眼力も必要である。煎じ詰めればそういう話が満載されている。

戦前暗黒史観を是正するのが目的なのだが、科学と哲学の分離
という現代にとって深刻な問題をあっさりと言ってみたり、
本質的発言が多かった。

雑談形式ということもあり、脱線に次ぐ脱線。
これもまたおもしろいのだが。。。また辛口。
かなりスパイシー。例えば、
戦前も戦後も大衆はイナゴの大群同様、欲してもいない女に参政権は
不要(責任ある壮年がもつべき)、見巧者の不在で映画は滅びた、
現代小説は死んだ、原水爆禁止などは世迷い言など言いたい放題。
しかし納得。

で、著者は大正生まれが原因なのか、昨今の若者の漢字知らずを
浮き彫りにしたいのか(笑)、なかなか意味の捉えにくい漢字が
多かった。例えば陋巷、鼓腹撃壌、嫋々たる、独参湯、粗略、
童蒙、束脩、偉丈夫などである。久々に辞書を何回も引くことに
なり、勉強になった(笑)。
戦後日教組的教育を受けてきた方であろうが、そうでなかろうが
リアルな戦前を知るにはよい本だと思う。

今は亡き夏彦氏といえば辛口コラムである。
ただ本人も書いていたようにコラムは言葉を削りすぎてよくわからない場合すらあった。

本書はインタビュー形式でかねてから力説されていた、
戦前は断じて暗黒時代ではなかった、
ということについて、夏彦氏にしては珍しく多くの言葉で語られている。

インタビュアーの方は「室内」の工作社の社員で現代若者の代表という位置づけのようだが、
決して平均的な若者ではなく、むしろかなりの才媛であり、
夏彦翁を向こうにまわして丁々発止とは行かないが、機転の利いた受けがみられる。

戦前というテーマは硬いのだが、中身は民俗的なことであり、
上記のようなやりとりもあることから楽しんで読むことができた。
写真コラムの後に読まれると良いかと思う。
