古の中国王朝時代の遊女から題材をとった七つの短編が収められた作品で、この井上祐美子
氏の作品を読んだのは初めて。井上祐美子氏は中国歴史小説の名手とのこと。

けれど、日本の歴史小説を読んだことはあるが、中国となるとほとんどなかったので、日経新聞の書評で、かなーり褒めらているのを読まなければ、多分購入しなかっただろう。

読みはじめてみても、昔の中国、という時代設定にあまり馴染めないせいか登場人物たちに感情移入できなかったし、遊女モノによくある色っぽさ艶やかさはそれほど感じなかった。もちろん、遊女としての悲しみ、したたかさ、強さ、美しさについてはしっかりと描かれていて、それほどドロドロしていないからすっきりと読めていったので、”よくまとまって面白いとは思うけれど、あまり感情を揺さぶってこないなあ”という印象をもちながらページを捲っていた。

けれど、次第にそれぞれのストーリーに惹きこまれはじめていった。そして。

ラストの短編”名手”では唸ってしまった。その、たおやかな風情、登場人物たちの人物造形の面白さ、軽妙な会話のテンポ、すべてが謎めいて終わるラストながらもさわやかな読後感、などなど私としてはある意味、大陸、というよりも日本的な風雅さを感じつつ、しばらく余韻に浸ってしまった。

こういう短編は、現代を舞台にした小説ではなかなか読めないだろうし、こういう感慨にもひたれないだろうと思う。一読の価値はあると思う。

妓女の中でも、風格の高い、日本で言うと「花魁」レベルの女性たちの恋やら、かけひきやら。

短編集なので、あたりもあればはずれもあり。

まあ、違う国の違う世界をちょっと覗き見する楽しさと、

女ならではの切なさと。

あんまり色っぽい場面はないです。

それよりも、彼女たちの博識さやプライドのぶつかり合いがおもしろいかな？

中古の値段なら、読んで損はないと思いますよ。

著者久々の新刊である．休筆の間に何もなければ，と心配だったが著者は健在である．これをまず喜びたい．中華古今の妓女を主人公に，あやかしの別世界が展開される．その数七編．叛乱軍に殺される美女から皇帝について流刑に赴く美女まで，時代は北宋から南宋および明末清初あたりが中心となる．それぞれのイメージは明確この上なく，うっかり読み続けたらイメージにうなされて眠れなくなった．この点要注意．最後に置かれた作は，中唐の大詩人が聴く都の名人の琵琶の音の話(琵琶行)で，とりわけ趣深い．これらの作品には時としてかなり深い中華の歴史の知識が要求される，と言うか知識があった方が断然よく判り愉しめるので，日本語および中文ウィキペディアの利用をお勧めする．宋の徽宗が亡くなった五国城は現在のハルビン市の市域内にあることはこの手段で判った．とにかく著者の健在を祝う．推薦．
