この本を読んだことで著名な数学者へのイメージが変わりました。
これまで、ただ数学の探求のみに人生を捧げてきた人たちと思って
いたのですが、実は彼らは数学以外に人間臭い面を少なくとも一つ
は持っていることが分かりました。政治、愛、地位…。また、常に
孤独感を背負っており、その寂しさを埋めようとあがいている様も
浮かびました。

私は制御に関する研究を行っている学生で、普段様々な数学に触れ
ますが、それらを作ってきた数学者に関する知識はありませんでし
た。ただの伝記ではなく、著者自身それぞれの数学者に関連のある
場所を尋ね、そこでの出会いなども描かれており、自ら旅をしてい
るような感覚を味わいながら数学者達の「栄光と挫折」を知ること

ができました。分量が適当かつテンポも良かったので、どんどんと
読み進めることができました。

９人の古今東西の数学の天才列伝。
日本人として関孝和が入っている。

まず、数学を愛して止まない著者の姿が好ましい。その人柄が自ずと分かる文章である。
そして、もちろん、９人の「天才」数学者の苦悩と感動のドラマも興味深い。
数学者として天才で有ったからと言って、もちろん人生の成功者とは言えない。
それでも、数学が持つ魔力に魅了された９人は、僕たち人類の本質である“好奇心”と“探究心”のいちサンプルとして、あまねく紹介されている良書である。
圧巻は『フェルマーの最終定理』を証明したワイルズの章だ。

扱われている数学者はニュートン、ラマヌジャン、チューリングなど。数学の話題は出ないので、それのみを目的にした読者は落胆するだろう。しかしこの本は伝記なのである数学の解説書ではない。伝記だけでも十分価値がある。この本では人物それぞれを簡潔に書いてある。また文章も美しく、時折いいな~と思う文章に出くわした。数学者について興味がある人にはぜひお勧め。また紹介されている数学者についてもっと知りたいなら、ニュートンハミルトン、ラマヌジャンについては「心は孤独な数学者」（藤原正彦著）、チューリングには「甦るチューリング」（星野力著）、ワイルズについては「フェルマーの最終定理」（サイモン・シン著）がお勧め。
