著者の代表的な短編が、余さず収録されています。

初期の代表作「貧乏な叔母さんの話」から、
優れた小品である「スパゲティーの年に」や、
さらには最新の短編集「東京奇譚集」の作品群まで。

１Q８４で村上春樹を読み始めた方に、
短編の魅力も知っていただくには最適です。

　＊＊＊

また、全集にしか収められていない「人喰い猫」や、
書き下ろしの「蟹」が、マニアをも満足させることでしょう。

特に「蟹」は、とても興味深い作品ですよ。
あの名作「野球場」のなかで、登場人物が書いた小説を、
村上春樹氏自身が作品化したというものです。

装丁もお洒落で、値段も（ボリュームを考えれば）手頃です。
プレゼントにも向いているかもしれません。

第1弾だった『象の消滅』は黄色だったが、
今作は赤色（濃いピンクか？？）の装丁。
ちょっとクリスマスカラーっぽくもあります。

村上春樹の短編集には違いないのだが、
外国の読者に向けて編集され、
アメリカで英語版で出版された短編集と同じ構成で
日本で発売されるという「逆輸入」感覚が新鮮です。

村上春樹の小説ってもともと翻訳っぽい文体なんですよね。
本人も翻訳をするしね。

外国でも人気が高く国際派である村上春樹の
面目躍如の短編集なのです。

収録された24編のほとんどはすでに読んだ作品なのですが、
今回のために書き下ろされた新作があるのです。

それが『蟹』という作品。

買ってきてこの作品だけすぐに読みました。

わずか10ページの小品であるが、
なかなか余韻を残す味わい深い作品。

男女二人がシンガポールで見つけた食堂で
蟹を食べまくるお話。

最後は意外な展開をみせる。

村上春樹はイントロダクションでこう語っている。

長篇小説を書くことは「挑戦」であり、
短篇小説を書くことは「喜び」である。

長篇小説が「植林」であるとすれば、
短篇小説は「造園」である。

みなさんも村上春樹の短篇小説の
「造園」された「喜び」を味わってください。

　「人喰い猫」を読んで、僕は、そうだったんだ、僕だけじゃなかったんだと得心した。
「他の人間に対してはなかなかうまく説明できないことも、彼女に対しては自分でもびっくりするくらい正確に説明できた。」
　そういう経験って、確かになかなかなくて、というかほとんどないのだけど、そんな邂逅にこの上ない幸せを感じてしまう。
「ひとりの人間が自分の気持ちをあるがままにしっくりと、十全に伝えることのできる相手にめぐり合う(原文では「会う」ではなく「合う」となっています。）機会というのは驚くほど少ないのだ。それはたぶん奇跡とか僥倖とかに近いかもしれない。」「それは、世間一般に考えられている愛というものとはそれほど関係のないことなのだろう。」
　この短編を読んでいて、あれぇこんなのあったかなぁと思ったのだけど、巻末の説明では「村上春樹全作品1979−1989」第８巻とあり、1991年７月の書き下ろしでした。どうりで初読だったのでした。

　追伸　今にして思えば「カンガルー日和」は「バナナフィッシュにうってつけの日」へのオマージュだったのですね。英訳の「A perfect day for kangaroos」を見て、初めて気が付きました。
