5.0 out of 5 stars ヘッセの作品の中で一押しです, 2004/3/25
　ヘッセというと「車輪の下」という人が多く、暗くて救いようのない話を書くとおもわれがちのような感じをうける。
　しかし、この作品は、ヘッセの故郷の自然と人々への愛情が溢れていて、とてもすがすがしい。ヘッセ自身の若い、溢れる力も感じられ、人生を愛し、人を愛する温かさが心地いい。

　ユーモアも一杯で、笑って泣けて、しみじみしてしまう。きっと読んだ人にも人生を愛する力を与えてくれる。
　ヘッセを読んでみようとおもったら、この作品も読んで欲しい。

それがいつの頃だったか定かではない。でも確かにこの本を読み、そして感じた。思いを寄せる人から贈られた一冊が「郷愁」だった。そしてその人との再会が記憶を呼び起こした。

あの頃、ヘッセの思いを感じ、自分自身の思いとくらべた。ヘッセが感じたのと同じ不安や苦悩が自分にもあった。読み返した時、自分自身の将来への暗示が感じられた。決して明るい未来ではないが、やがて安住の地にたどり着くことがおぼろげながら見えていたと思う。２０年余りが過ぎた今、私は故郷に住みヘッセと同じように故郷を愛している。

あの時、確かに自分の未来を感じた。
ヘッセの自然への思い、みずみずしい描写を目にすると、それと同じ世界に住む自分を幸福に思う。

時代は20世紀初頭。産業革命以来の近代化の潮流は一層激しく、物質面のみならず人間の精神までその支配下に置き始めていた。山や水、雲や風を生まれながらにして愛する主人公ペーター・カーメンチントは都会での青春の栄光と挫折を経験しながら、やはり自らの本質はその出自である百姓にあることを悟る。ヘッセの近代文明に対する懐疑と反発、そして人間や自然への愛情を基調とした思想は現代にも通じ、ジブリ作品と共通のテーマを有する。叙情作家ヘルマン・ヘッセ27歳の出世作。
