　芥川竜之介の作品を読むたびに私は彼の書く人間の姿に圧倒される。鮮烈で効果的な情景描写の中に少しずつ浮き彫りになっていく下人の本性。老婆と出会い、極限状態から堕落していく姿を見ていると背筋が寒くなる思いがした。

　根は真面目でどこにでもいるようなこの下人は自分や自分の周りの人に重ねることができるように思える。私達はいつでもこの下人のように堕ちていくことができるのだ。自分のいいように都合を合わせ、自分を正当化し、良くはないと分かっていながらも止めることのできなかった下人に私達はいつでもなれるのだ。雨、からす、黒洞々たる夜。たくさんのこういった表現を用いることで、不気味な雰囲気を醸し出しながら、作者はこのような人間の裏側に隠れている誰もが持つ弱くて醜い部分をこの小説で書こうとしたのだ。

　それでもやっぱり下人は最後は基の機が小さく弱虫菜優しい人間に戻ってほしいと願いたい。

　私はこの本を見て人間の心の不可解さを知った。小説の中の「羅生門」では最初は人の髪をとる老婆を嫌悪する男が、最後は自らも盗みを働くし、「袈裟と盛遠」では自らことをわかっていながら、矛盾していると知りながらも行動に出ようとする人間がいる。

　しかし芥川龍之介はそういう人間の非常に抽象的、曖昧ではっきりとはわからない人間の心を文章に表現するのがうまいなあと思います。

「羅生門」はあまりにも有名で、すでにあらゆる角度から分析され、批評され尽くしたのかと思っていましたが、なんと、あの下人の行動を恥の文化（『菊と刀』を読んだ方ならご存知でしょう）で説明した人があります。「羅生門　菊と刀」で検索してご覧なさい。
