自由奔放な生き方を貫いた映画評論家による赤裸々な自伝。著者が菊池寛や川口松太郎など錚々たる文人たちの愛人だったことはよく知られているが、その中の一人だった檀一雄が「俺はこうしてもらわなければ書けないんだ」と言い張り、小森和子に男性自身を握らせて小説を執筆した話など、こんなこと書いていいのかなと思うような差し障りのある記述が多く、さながら一種異色の裏文壇史という趣もあってなかなか面白い。何かというと「生活に困ったら、身を売ってでも、と覚悟して」という発言が飛び出すのは著者の密かな願望だったのか妙に可笑しい。俗に「最後の文士」という言い方があるが、小森和子こそは「最後のモガ」と呼ばれるにふさわしい存在だったというべきである。
