コンパクトで、英和中辞典くらいの版型なのに、すごい実力だと思います。
縦組と横組が選べるのも、いい。岩波がこれをやってましたが、この集英社
辞典は、専門語彙について英語を示したりしてるので、わりに横文字が
飛び込んできます。そういうのに違和感がないのはやはり横組で、ひごろ
英和辞典等横組の辞典を引きなれている方には、配列が一緒なので横は
優れていると思います。
私は、以上のような理由に加え、他に持っている辞書が全て縦組みなので、
これについては横組版を選択したわけです。

ちなみに、私の手元のものは第2版1刷ですが、重篤は出ています。
公欠はないですが、この言葉は、手元の明鏡・新明解・新潮国語にも
ありませんので、それだけで下の方が評価を下げていらっしゃるのは
あまり適切ではないかと思います。

私は実はしばらく、この第二版が出てたのは知らずにいたんです。2000年の発行なのでもう3年近く経つんだし、と思いつつ、最新の大修館「明鏡国語辞典」を買い、そのレビューにちらりとこれのことも書きつつ、初版があるからなぁとしばらく買わずにいたのでしたが、今になって結局、これも買ってしまう羽目になりました。まあ、初版と比べて、語数で見る限り2千語程度の追加に過ぎなかったりはするのですが、1998年版NHK日本語アクセント辞典新版に準拠して4250語に及ぶアクセントの改訂もされているようですので、別途その辞典を買ったと思えば、実はこれを買ったほうが安かったりもしてるんですね。しかも、補訂は2万に及ぶということなので、よく見比べてみれば、確かに「おや？」と思うものにも出会えます。もちろん、大型辞書ではありませんので、総体の情報量では大辞林や広辞苑には及びません。しかし、片手で持てる便利なこのサイズに9万4千語も収めた国語辞典は他にありません。ただ語数が多いだけではなく、解説も実は非常に詳しく、語の定義も非常に正確だと思います。これ一冊で、現代語・古語・新語・外来語・社会語・専門語・固有名詞に至るまで、殆どすべてオーライです。加えて、読みさえ分かれば、単漢字は大きな見出しになってるので、漢字の綴りの確認も容易です。初版の時より百語増えたABC略語集も付録についてます。付録の殆どは初版の時のままですが、語彙・品詞・表現・方言・発音等の様々な観点から日本語というものを考える上での貴重な資料になっています。横組が嫌いな人には縦組もありますし、字が小さいという人には大活字版もあり、至れり尽くせりの構成でもあります。こんな凄い辞書に、何故、この改訂版については私以前のレビューがないのか分かりません。私の観点では、少なくとも片手で持てるサイズのものの中では、これが最高・最良の国語辞典です。

無論、本邦の最高峰の国語辞典は岩波の『広辞苑』であるが、大辞典であるので常用するには少し重過ぎるということがある。反対に他の中辞典は収録語数が少なくて「引いた言葉が載ってない」なんて事が多々起きる。本辞典は、中型辞典としては最大級の収録語数を誇る辞典である。基本語は言うに及ばず、時事的、百科事典的、専門的な固有名詞やカタカナ語にめっぽう強いのが本辞典の特徴である。各見出し語に文章語・口語・死語の指示がなされ、文章に使う際に最適な正書法（綴り方）を明らかにし、語釈も簡潔かつ正確である。使用者は日本語の最適な表現と情報を引き出せるだろう。巻末の付録も充実して「日本語の語彙の体系と歴史」「日本語の品詞-口語を中心に」「日本語の表現」「日本の表現」などはとても参考になる。ワープロで文章が作成されることも考慮され、漢字コード表も備えられる。実用のための、頼れる大辞典並みの中型国語辞典。
