今日、本屋で何気なく手に取ったら気に入って買ってしまった。｢集英社国語辞典｣。

小型国語辞典なら｢新明解｣、｢三省堂国語辞典｣、｢角川必携国語辞典｣、｢岩波国語辞典｣などを持っている。これらの国語辞典は言葉の辞書だ。言葉の意味や使い方に主眼を置いている。

｢集英社国語辞典｣は言葉の辞書と百科事典を兼ね備えている。さらに漢字辞典の機能もある。合計９４０００項目。したがって、類書に比べてページ数が格段に多い。｢新明解｣が１５００ページなのに、２１００ページもある。値段も３５００円と、類書に比べて１０００円〜１５００円高くなっている。

百科辞典的要素が採り入れられていると楽しく読める。高橋竹山、淀川長治、石ノ森章太郎などまで載っている。

｢広辞苑｣や｢大辞林｣などの大型国語辞典は内容は豊富だが、引くのにも場所をとるし、重い。寝ころんで引くわけにはいかない。したがって手が延びる頻度が少なくなる。｢集英社国語辞典｣はこれら大型国語辞典を小型にしたようなもの。手軽で引きやすい。

どなたにもお薦めの国語辞典だが、この第二版は２０００年の発行だ。今年で７年も経っているので、そろそろ第三版が出るのではないか。それまで待ったほうが良いかも知れない。

無論、本邦の最高峰の国語辞典は岩波の『広辞苑』であるが、大辞典であるので常用するには少し重過ぎるということがある。反対に他の中辞典は収録語数が少なくて「引いた言葉が載ってない」なんて事が多々起きる。本辞典は、中型辞典としては最大級の収録語数を誇る辞典である。基本語は言うに及ばず、時事的、百科事典的、専門的な固有名詞やカタカナ語にめっぽう強いのが本辞典の特徴である。各見出し語に文章語・口語・死語の指示がなされ、文章に使う際に最適な正書法（綴り方）を明らかにし、語釈も簡潔かつ正確である。使用者は日本語の最適な表現と情報を引き出せるだろう。巻末の付録も充実して「日本語の語彙の体系と歴史」「日本語の品詞-口語を中心に」「日本語の表現」「日本の表現」などはとても参考になる。ワープロで文章が作成されることも考慮され、漢字コード表も備えられる。実用のための、頼れる大辞典並みの中型国語辞典である。
