　とにかく泣きました。
　本当の愛を知っているタナベに『愛』を訊ねに行くハチマキ。彼女の実家で両親に逢い、酒を酌み交わし、そして家族と別れてふたり夜の道を歩く……。そのとき、ハチマキは彼女の『書き損じた』遺書を見たことを謝るのですが、彼女は涙を流してしまう。

　自分が死んでしまったとき、父に、母に何を語るべきなのか？

　自分がなにゆえ宇宙へ飛び立つのか？

　彼女の想いは大きすぎて、深すぎるがゆえに言葉にできない。
「愛がない！」という台詞はタナベを語る上では欠かせない定番の台詞なのだが、彼女はこの定番の台詞以上に素晴らしい言葉を叫ぶ。そして彼女を受け止めるハチマキ……。

　ハチマキはキムタクみたいな整った顔をしていません。けれど、そんな彼がタナベの想いを受け止める姿は、ベタなトレンディドラマよりも格段に素晴らしいのです。これが本当の恋愛だ、と心から納得できるほどに。
　世は純愛ブームですが、こういう形の『純愛』もオススメですよ。

２巻の最後でハチマキが気付いたこと。その先に見えるもの。
プラネテスの中心的テーマが３巻で扱われています。

完成された唯我独尊のエゴイストとして夢のために邁進するだけでは、
この宇宙の広大さと真理を理解し得ないことに気付いたハチマキは、
何をしても満たされなくなってしまった。

自分は何をしたら満たされるのか。自分の夢に何の意味があったのか。
そんな自問自答をすると、その答えの果てしなさに気が遠くなる。
そして彼は魂の抜け殻のようになってしまった。

木星行きのための訓練は続いていき、出発の日は近づく。
そしてそんな彼をとりまく、木星往還船のクルーたち。
彼らとのつながりを通じて、

ハチマキは問いの答えを持つ女性の名前をとうとう思い出す。

１巻の力任せ具合、２巻の痛快さも大好きですが、そこで描いた下地を経て、

３巻は全時代を通じて人に共通のテーマにがっちり取り組んだ漫画に仕上がっていると思います。悩みが大きい（丸ごと２、３話程度もそこに取り組みつづけた）だけに、そこから回復して方向性を見出すハチマキを見るとこちらの気持ちも高揚します。

違和感を感じている人も多いようですが、
１，２巻の下地なくしてこの展開はありえない。そう断言できます。

１，２巻読後にオススメです。

~プラネテスは「ありきたり」だ。特にハチマキの成長物語、愛と結婚が描かれる3巻は、
実はありきたりなストーリー展開であり、そこに目新しさはない。
それにも関わらず、感動する。シンプルな表現なのに、言葉が重いからだ。

例えば、16話「ハチマキ」のゴローのセリフ。
「これでお前も晴れて、手前勝手にくたばれない身の上ってワケだ」
この陳腐な~~フレーズには結婚の真実と幸福がすべて詰まっている。そこにある万感の
思いは、たぶん結婚をしていないと理解できない。

プラネテスの凄さは、まさにここだろう。真実を描くには、表現はシンプルになり、
物語はありきたりになる。その中で技巧に走らず、プラネテスはシンプルなまま
突き抜けて、作品として完成している。まるで初期の村上春樹や、少~~し古いけれど、
フィッツジェラルドのように、「シンプルなまま」変幻する名作に昇華している。~
