　「人生は、重き荷物を背負い長き坂を上るが如し。急ぐべからず」と家康が言ったというのは、後世の語り草。
　しかし、この言葉は、まさに家康の人生を象徴した言葉だと思います。

　この本を、僕は高校時代に読みました。全26巻と思うだけで、気が遠くなり、この長編を最後まで読めるのか、その不安ばかりがありました。
　しかし、読み始めると、意外に支障なく読むことができました。というのも、山岡荘八さんの物語は、具体的で物語の展開がはっきりしているために、お話しが無理なく頭に入ってきました。
　僕は、前段に彼の「織田信長」を読んでいましたから、歴史の流れを意識しながら、物語を楽しむことができました。
　これは、山岡荘八さんのライフワークとして書かれたものと言われていますが、徳川家康をモデルに、一人の人間の生き様を描いた大河ドラマです。

本作品は、日本中に「徳川家康ブーム」を引き起こした傑作中の傑作であり、作者山岡荘八が昭和25年から42年まで足掛け18年にわたって書いた一大巨編である。
一大巨編だけあり、非常に長い…全26巻!!
徳川家康の出生から、人質時代、信長、秀吉に使え、江戸幕府開府そして死を迎えるまで徳川家康75年の生涯を余すところなく伝えている。

全26巻、取り掛かるには非常に勇気がいる…しかし、読んでいただきたい。
家康の臨終の場面では、家康の人生と26巻読み終えた感慨で涙さえ出そうになる。
家康の人生観、「堪忍の心」現代の人間にも学ぶべきもののがあまりにも多い。
26巻は非常に長いように思えるが、決して中弛みは覚えない。是非読んでいただきたい作品である。

　初めてこの巻を手にしてから、もう20年は経ったはずです。
今また読み返し、あらたな発見が随所に見られます。
大河ドラマに登場したのが、1983年の事でした。滝田栄氏の
演じる「家康公」は今までの“狸親父・家康”のイメージを
払拭して余りあるものでした。

東海の弱小国に生まれた竹千代。物語は竹千代が生まれる前から
始まります。山岡先生は報道班員として従軍され、
前途有望な若者たちが特攻で散って行った悲劇を
その目で見て来られた方です。
平和＝泰平の招来のために生涯を「家康公」は捧げます。
その平和の尊さを身に沁みて筆に託した作品です。

決して平坦ではなく、苦難が次々とまだ幼い竹千代に訪れます。
しかしながら、生来の強運や周りの大人たちの暖かいまなざしが
彼をして花も実もある“弓取り”に育ててゆきます。
それはまるで巷間伝わる「遺訓」そのままです。

男の哀愁を書かせれば右に出るものなしというのが、
山岡先生の筆致ですが、女性の描き方も
なかなか押さえ処もよく、精妙です。

読めば読むほど味の出る全26巻。
本作はその序章です。
おススメです。
