著者紹介

1927年神奈川県生まれ。駒沢大学仏教学部卒業。東京大学大学院博士課程修了。東京大学東洋文化研究所教授を経て現在、東京大学名誉教授、愛知学院大学教授。文学博士。専攻は中国・朝鮮仏教史。学士院賞受賞。合気道5段。著書に、『中国仏教史』『朝鮮仏教史』、学術文庫に『仏陀の観たもの』『禅とはなにか』『八宗綱要』『五輪書』『般若心経講話』『華厳の思想』『正法眼蔵随聞記講話』などがある。

観音経を２１のパートに分け，それぞれについて1章をもうけ，
書き下し文，逐語訳とさらにそれを噛み砕いた解説が加えられている．
インド哲学を学んでいるというよりは，説教を聴いている感じ．
読みやすい文章で，400ページを越す本であるが，苦に感じない．
観音経で語られる教えを知るための絶好の書．

文章の中では，観音経の以外の経典や古典も多く引用している．
索引がついているのがうれしい．

正法眼蔵、葉隠、五輪書、臨済録、往生要集、菜根譚、白隠など豊富な切り口から観音経を解釈し、そのこころをといている。観音経は現生利益のお経と言われることもあるが、本書では一心称名とは自らが観音になりきることと言い切る。水難にあっても観音様を唱えれば難から免れる。水難とは溺れること、日々どんなに溺れていることか、酒に溺れ、金に溺れ、名誉に溺れ、自らの些細な欲に溺れている。一心に唱えることでその欲から離れ、周りが見えてきて慈心にも気づく。鎌田氏の幅広い冷静知的な解釈とともに先生の情熱、厳しさと暖かさも感じ取れる本です。「法華経を読む」とあわせて読むこともおすすめです。

観音菩薩は無相であり、一木一草に至るまで宇宙に遍在しておられる。一心称名することで観音様は私と観応道交する。私が観音様になることが大切なのであり、私の外におられて、神のようにおすがりし、念を叶えて頂くという簡単なものではない。念が叶うというときそれはあくまで結果にすぎない。苦にあるときでも動じず金剛不壊の心でいれば、観音様は様々な姿をとって現れ迷いや煩悩を消しさり救いの手を差し延べてくれる。そう信じて観音経のなかの短い『十句観音経』だけでも読誦、念誦する。あるいは坐禅・修行する。
実に豊富な文献に目を通され、観音菩薩についてあらゆる観点から言及されており、大切なことが繰り返し繰り返し述べられている。引用、言及が重複するところもあるが、この大切な一点をやさしく著者は説いておられるので、読み手が虚心坦懐であれば心の奥に染み込んでくるものと思われる。シンプルだけど奥が深い観音経はきっと心の支えになると思う。
