この「番外編」での坊やは現役のギャンブラーではない。サラリーマンである。そして、主人公としては描かれてはいない。

主人公は、ギャンブルのためなら命と奪われることも厭わない、ギャンブルを最高の贅沢と考える男“李憶春”である。当然、戦後の混乱期でもない当時の世の中では生きてゆけない男である。「青春編」に登場するギャンブラー以上のギャンブラーといえる人物であろう。

ドサ健も彼なりに自分のルールに則って世の中を泳いでいるのだが、やはり昔とは違う。しかし、坊やもドサ健も、結局李憶春の世界に飛び込んでいく。彼に昔の自分の姿を重ね合わせたのか、ギャンブラーとしての血がそうさせたのか…。ラストシーンの物悲しさは、ギャンブルだけに生きようとして、時代に飲み込まれようとしている男達を描いたこの作品に相応しい。

この作品は番外編ではない。「青春編」に始まったこのシリーズは、「風雲編」を経て「激闘編」で一度区切りとなるのだが、シリーズの本当の完結はこの「番外編」である。それに値する内容とラストシーンである。その後発表された「新麻雀放浪記」は別の作品であろう。「青春編」から始まる４作品は、何度読んでも飽きることがない、日本が誇るエンターテイメント小説である。

作品の内容とは関係ないが、やはり、阿佐田哲也の作品のカバーは黒鉄ヒロシの絵が最も似合う。阿佐田哲也の作品の世界にピッタリの絵であるのと同時に、作品の主題を明確に表現している。

全４作の４作目番外編で、前３作とは少し違った目線で見られる作品。
主人公哲が玄人(プロ)を引退してからの話で、新たに加わる李億春ら関西勢力と”ドサ健”率いる関東の地元勢力が意地と技での勢力争い。
その後李の情熱により”坊や哲”がここに復活、そして選ばれた４人が最後の勝負に出る。この結果は本作にてご覧ください。

麻雀小説と言ったら阿佐田哲也氏の「麻雀放浪記」としか思い浮かばない程に、この本にハマっています（笑）
そして、その没頭している「麻雀放浪記」で最も印象深く、読んでいる時に1番時が経つのを忘れてしまった作品が、
この「麻雀放浪記４ 番外編」である。
この小説の面白いところはなにも麻雀を打っている（やっている）時だけでは無い。

登場する個性豊かな人物が繰り広げる行動、生き様を見る（？）だけでもタイヘン面白く、味わい深い。
普通の小説に飽きている方々にも、麻雀が好きな方々にも、是非とも一度は読んで見ると良いと思っています。
