この激闘編に登場するギャンブラーは皆、キャバレーの経営者、金融業、インチキ出版社の経営者など裏街道ではあるが皆本業を持っている。ギャンブルは小遣い稼ぎであり、全てを賭けるものではないと考えている。出目徳の息子に三井にいたっては、ギャンブラーとしての父親の生き様を全く認めていない。時代の移り変わりである。

坊や哲も給料取りになるのだが、どうしてもサラリーマンにはなりきれず、アウトローの匂いを撒き散らしている。やはり、自分で決めたルールには忠実であろうとするが、時代がそれを許さない。

この作品には「青春編」で登場した人物も描かれている。女衒の達、ドサ健、そしてなんといってもチン六である。この作品のラストは、バラック小屋での坊やとチン六達のチンチロリンのシーンとなっている。坊やも含めて落ちぶれた男達である。このシリーズはチンチロリンのシーンで幕を開けるのだが、このラストも、時代の流れに乗れない男達には相応しいシーンである。

「青春編」に始まったこのシリーズは、「風雲編」を経て「激闘編」で一度区切りとなるのだが、その後「番外編」と続く。本当の完結はこの「番外編」である。その後発表された「新麻雀放浪記」は別の作品である。「青春編」から始まる４作品は、何度読んでも飽きることがない、日本が誇るエンターテイメント小説である。

作品の内容とは関係ないが、やはり、阿佐田哲也の作品のカバーは黒鉄ヒロシの絵が最も似合う。阿佐田哲也の作品の世界にピッタリの絵であるのと同時に、作品の主題を明確に表現している。

全４作の３作目で激闘編タイトルどうり激闘です。
戦後から変わりゆくのは世の中だけではない、その流れが玄人（プロ）の常識も変えてゆく、博打一筋の玄人”坊や哲””ドサ健”らと新たな副業的玄人達との激闘が描かれた作品

もうページがスラスラ進んじゃう。
休憩入れる暇がない。
次へ次へと先が気になる。
読後、何度でも読み返したくなる。
そして登場人物の魅力的なこと。
繰り広げられる展開の面白いこと。
つまりこれはそれだけの名作なのだ。
池波、藤周あたり読むならこっちの方が断然面白い。
そして司馬遼、浅田ではとうてい書けないハイエナの世界がここにはある。

黙って読むべし。
