一見原文に忠実な訳で信頼が置けるように見えるが，中公文庫版に比べて難渋なことは否めない。しかも監訳者水田氏と英文学者・別宮貞則氏との間で論争された訳文の適否の箇所については，相変わらず改められていない部分も見られる（訳者の見解と言えばそれまでだが…）。

近代経済思想のおおもと、アダム・スミス。経済学はもちろん、政治学、哲学などの分野の人は読んでみるといいでしょう。市場原理や自由競争、また分業のすばらしさ（というか利点）が分かります。本書は一般的に「神の見えざる手」という言葉で有名ですね。ただしこの言葉は（岩波文庫の）二巻などの一部でしか使われていません。

貨幣の流通を見る際の思考の幅が確実に広がります。4巻までは長いですが、がんばってみて損はありません。市場原理や自由競争に疑問が投げかけられているいまだからこそ、またそれらに疑問を投げかける際に内在的批判ができるようになるためにも、読んで損はないと思います。

個人的には、訳が難しかったという印象はありませんでした。

政治経済学の先駆者Adam Smithが1776年アメリカ独立の年に記した「国富論」は現在でも古臭さを感じさせない。分業の経済効果、市場の機能、通貨の役割、ものの価値など経済の基本となる考え方を具体例を交えて安易に説明してくれます。需要と供給に影響を及ぼす様々な条件への洞察力と経済の非効率、無駄に対する正義感にも近い信念には温かい人間味を感じます。また、ここまで明確に指摘、非難されている経済の非効率、無駄が現代社会にも時に形を変え根強く残っていることを見るにつれて、政治経済の重要性と難しさを感じます。徒弟制度が如何に既得権益を守るために維持され人材の流動性を妨げ、結果として経済に悪影響を及ぼすか。不用意な銀行の貸付、破綻を避けるための偽善的追加融資が如何にバブルをつくり最終的には経済の負担となるか。大きな政府による公共事業が如何に不正の温床となり非経済的になり得るか。株式会社の経営者が如何に株主の資産である会社の経営を等閑にするリスクがあるか。これらの議題に関するSmithの議論は現在の政治経済問題の理解にも十分寄与します。福祉大国にならんとする日本においては、「富の蓄積」についての議論が警笛のように聞こえ気になります。資本投資となる「富」と富の再配分となる「歳入」が社会に与えるインセンティブの違いとSmithの観察するその結果。「富は節約により増やせるが、浪費と不正により失われる。」日本はこれから今まで以上に浪費と不正を防ぎ、節約を実践することができるのか。それを実現できる仕組みがあるのか。そのための議論がなされているのか。経済の専門書としてではなく一般大衆向けに書かれているため、英語は少し古いですが、経済学部出身者でなくても原文で読むこと可能です。迷訳の多い翻訳より分かり易いかもしれません。
