　（第2部からの続き）

　第2部の第31章の段階ではさほど明確にはならなかったが、第3、4部で大々的に聖書が取り上げられ、ホッブズがその解釈作業に深々と入り込んでいくのは、ローマ・カトリック教会のヨーロッパ全土に及ぼす権力が、「自然法」にも「神の法」にも背いていることを撃つためである。第3部の表題は「キリスト教のコモン-ウェルスについて」となっているが、「キリスト教のコモン-ウェルス」とはカトリック教会のことだ。
　教科書的なホッブズ理解においても、「教会権力に対する国家権力の優越を説いた」というのは、ホッブズの思想の要点のひとつである。

　カトリック教会は、（『リヴァイアサン』第1、2部に示されたような仕方で結ばれた）社会契約によって「主権」を獲得してはいない。また、旧約聖書におけるユダヤ人のための「神の王国」、新約聖書におけるキリストが支配する「神の王国」のいずれにもカトリック教会は該当しないし、ローマ法王が「奇蹟」を伴って神の啓示を告げているわけでもない。そうである以上、カトリック教会・ローマ法王の権力は、ヨーロッパ各国の「国家主権」に優越するものとして認めるわけにはいかない。人々は、もっぱら国家主権に対してのみ服従すべきなのである。

　ここで注意しなければならないのは、ホッブズの政治思想は必ずしも非宗教的・反宗教的な態度をとるものではなく、むしろ、（王が統治する）俗なる世界についての政治理論と、（神が統治する）聖なる世界についての神学理論を、何とかして総合しようと試みているように思われるという点だ。
　ホッブズがそんなことを明確に意識していたかどうかは分からない。それにホッブズは、当時の彼を取り巻いていた抜き差しならない政治的、社会的状況のなかで、ある意味では日和を見ながら書いていたようなところもあるようなので、『リヴァイアサン』自体もどこまで本気なのか分からないといえば分からない。
　しかし、ともかく我々に残された『リヴァイアサン』という書物の後半は、「政治学と神学の総合を試みたもの」として読むのが、最も理解しやすいアプローチだろうと私は思うのだ。（たとえば43章を参照）

　ところで、この第3部に到ってはっきりするのは、『リヴァイアサン』から「信仰の自由」や「基本的人権」を読み取ろうとする訳者序文（解説）が、おおよそデタラメであるということである。
　たしかにホッブズは「信、不信はけっして人間たちの命令から生じるものではない」「信仰は神のおくりものであって、人はそれを、報酬の約束や拷問の脅威によって、あたえることもとりさることも、できない」（211頁）と述べてはいるが、これは当り前のことを言っているにすぎない。

　ホッブズが言いたいのは、政治的主権者──それがキリスト者であろうと異端であろうと不信心者であろうと──に対する絶対的服従が、「神の法」への服従と一致する、ということである。「信仰の自由」やら「基本的人権」の尊重を導こうとしているのではなくて、ホッブズの主眼はあくまで、カトリック教会の振るう権力が「神の法」から逸脱したものであることを暴くという点に置かれている。

　さらにいえばホッブズは、たとえば「リヴァイアサンへの附録」の第2章では、無神論者は追放されるべきだとも述べているのである。
　「国家権力に対して基本的人権、とくに信仰＝良心の自由をつらぬこうとするホッブズの努力は、この本のいたるところににじみでている」などという訳者の解説は、曲解もいいところである。
