　生と死とは、愛とはどんなものかをテーマに書かれた長篇小説。
　単純な人間、ハンス・カストルプがひょんなことからとある山の上のサナトリウムに仮入院したことから始まり、彼が精神的な成長を遂げ、それゆえに山を下りる（＝物語の幕が下りる）所までが描かれる。

　とても長い小説なので、途中で飽きてしまいそうになるが、カストルプが「単純な人間」であることが、逆に人生や人間のあり方といった問題を扱うのにふさわしかったのだ、ということも上下巻を通して読むと分かってくるし、頑張って読むに足る名作だと思う。

　中でも音楽「菩提樹の歌」によせて描かれる「死の世界への愛」が印象的で、最後にはこの歌とともに読者はカストルプと別れを告げることになる。
　個人的には、繰り返ちかれる自由や若者の生き方に対し、深く考えさせられた。

話の内容的には主人公のハンスがひょんなことから病院に療養することになり、、というような話ですが
単純に物語として読んでも愛や死への畏れや主人公の精神的な成長などとても面白く楽しめるないようですが
この作品には哲学的な意味合いも深い
読んでない人に悪いので何も言いませんがとにかく一度読んでみて

何度も読み返して裏の裏の意味まで見つけ出せると味の出る本でもあります
そしてマンの描写力のすばらしさもこの本を引き立てている一つだと思います

ずいぶん時間をかけて読了しました。ペーペルコルン氏の登場で、それまでハンスの教育者的役割を担っていたナフタとセテンブリーニの影が急速に薄くなっていったので、このままハンスが感化されておしまいかと思っていたら、「人物」であるはずのペーペルコルン氏は内在した矛盾によって自らの命を絶ち、そしてナフタもペーペルコルン氏の存在によってより先鋭化された思想の帰結として死に至ります。結局物語の冒頭で「平凡」の烙印を押されたハンスは無事「魔の山」を下りますが、そのハンスも戦火に飲まれ・・・とあらすじを述べるタブーを犯してしまいましたのは、こういった要約を読んだ上でも揺らぐことのない物語世界が本書に構築されていることを確信しているからです。ドイツ教養小説の名で語られることが多いですが、その実読まれることが決して多くはないであろう本書は、その他の多くの、いわゆる「名作」と呼ばれる作品群にあってとりわけ現代と通底した作品であるように思われます。個人的なことですが、読み進めていきながらいつの間にかセテンブリーニに深いまなざしを向けている自分に気づいて、２０数年間、田舎の女子高で国語を十年一日のごとく教える我が身が思い返されて、思わず苦笑をもらしてしまいました。
