   本作品は、空前の大ベストセラーとなった『朗読者』（英訳『The Reader』）に続く、著者ベルンハルト・シュリンク初の短篇小説集。この作品の中で彼は、社会や国家の歴史やありかたに否応なく影響を受ける男女の愛をはじめ、子どもに対する父親の愛情、1枚の絵に描かれた少女への特別な感情、さらには妻のほかに2人の女性と関係を持ち、三重生活を送る男の愛など、さまざまな愛のかたちを描いている。

これまで「愛」と信じていたものが、もろくも崩れ去り、自分の手の中から砂のようにこぼれ落ちていくのを、ただ見ているしかない男女。青年、成年、中年、老年にわたる様々な主人公達の、恋人への妻への子供への、そして自分への「愛」と信じていたものは、いったい何だったのか。

「愛」をつきつめればつきつめるほど、また、自分の「愛」に正直になればなるほど“逃げてゆく”「愛」の不条理を、真摯に捉えた「残酷な愛」の書でもある。
ドイツ人作者ならではのドライで誠実な人間関係を堪能できる。
☆「真剣な愛」を経験したことのある人におすすめ。

　長編『朗読者』の世界的ヒットが日本でも話題になった、ベルンハルト・シュリンクの短篇集。知的でスタイリッシュな７編が収められています。繊細な男女の愛に、現代のドイツやドイツ人の抱える問題を、さりげなくからめて語っています。たとえば最後に置かれた作品『ガソリンスタンドの女』は、シンプルでありながら深い余韻の残る佳品です。『朗読者』と同じく新潮社から翻訳も出ています。邦題は『逃げてゆく愛』。

私が最も気に入ったのは、ドイツ人男性とユダヤ人女性（そうしたければ、順番を逆にしてください）の恋愛を描いた「割礼」。テーマだけを聞くと、随分と陳腐に聞こえるかもしれないが、そこは『朗読者』のシェリングのこと。巧妙な人物設定と少し意外な結末によって、読後に忘れがたい印象を植え付け、私たちは正答のない（そして提出期限もない）宿題を課されたかのように感じることだろう。

この短編では、ナレーティヴな部分は、ドイツ人男性（と語り手）の側にあるが、そのことが、「あれこれと悩む男と、あんまりは悩んでいない女」（The above disclaimer also applies here.）という印象を与えているように私は思った。ユダヤ人女性の側にナレーションをおいた場合や、「ドイツ人女性とユダヤ人男性」（ここでもディスクレーマーは必要ですか？）という設定を想像してみたら面白いと思った。
